Daniel Boffa, MD, recently joined WTNH News 8 for , and talked about the importance lung cancer screening: "Smokers can take advantage of lung cancer screening. Getting a CT scan every year - which takes a few minutes to perform, will reduce your chances of having your life shortened by lung cancer by 20%. If you are 50 or older, currently smoke or smoked in the past, ask your primary care physician about lung screening.”

Dr. Daniel Boffa from Smilow Cancer Hospital spoke with News 8's Darren Kramer about lung cancer treatment and prevention.

The Connecticut Proton Therapy Center in Wallingford is one step closer to opening after the recent installation of the cyclotron, a powerful 55-metric-ton machine essential to delivering proton therapy. Once open, the center will be the first facility in Connecticut offering treatment with proton therapy.

The main advantage of proton therapy over other types of radiotherapy is that the dose is more finely controlled, significantly reducing entry, exit, and scattered radiation, allowing physicians to safely deliver higher doses of radiation to tumors with fewer side effects.

Earlier this month, a major milestone was reached in the opening of the Connecticut Proton Therapy Center in Wallingford, CT. A joint effort between Yale New

Musician and guitarist Jeremy Goldsmith of Fairfield began experiencing left side weakness. Over the next few weeks, the weakness increasingly worsened and when some of his fingers stopped working properly, he went to the ER at Greenwich Hospital. A brain tumor in his right parietal lobe was discovered, and Jeremy was transferred to Smilow Cancer Hospital where he was operated on by Dr. Jennifer Moliterno, chief of neurosurgical oncology and the clinical director of the Chênevert Family Brain Tumor Center.

Dr. Moliterno completely removed his tumor and preserved the hand function crucial to his job. Immediately after waking up from surgery, Jeremy realized he had regained full sensation in his hand. He was home four days later and was soon back to playing the guitar.

“It’s incredibly satisfying to help with the neurological and functional part of it, and quality of life,” said Dr. Moliterno.

This CT professional musician was worried about his livelihood after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor but after surgery to remove it, he’s back to work again.

Lydia St. Hilaire, Community Health Navigator from the CT Early Detection & Prevention Program (CEDPP) shared her appreciation for Ashley Shelden, Jessica Gural, and Mariann Dinelle from Smilow Cancer Hospital at Waterford, “Every year during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our program receives an overwhelming number of requests for education. This year I had the pleasure to have Ashley, Jessica, and Mariann join in to help educate our community about the importance of early detection, self-breast exams, and mammograms. They listened to survivor stories, heard about barriers to care, and connected deeply with the community’s real experiences and that kind of impact is truly priceless.”

Thank you for sharing, Lydia, and thank you to Ashley, Jessica, and Mariann for representing Smilow and making an impact on the community!

Today is the , a day when many people decide to commit to a healthier life by quitting smoking. The benefits to quitting are immense, and the Smilow To***co Treatment Program can equip you with the tools to stop – or never even begin. Our program includes a multidisciplinary team of advanced nurse practitioners, psychologists, physicians, and research staff who can tailor treatment to each patient’s situation and to***co use history.

Having this support can help break the cycle of to***co use, especially with news of a troubling trend starting in certain populations to re-glamorize cigarette smoking. ‘Cig-fluencer’ social media accounts are sharing images of celebrities smoking ci******es, which experts worry could hook a new generation on smoking, damaging decades of public health gains.

More than 90% of long-term smokers started before the age of 18, said Daniel Boffa, MD.

"The problem with to***co smoking in the teenage and young adult years is that the most severe health-related consequences won’t appear for a few decades, making it easier to ignore the warnings," he warned.

While teen smoking drops to under 3%, health experts fear pop culture revival could undo progress as 90% of long-term smokers start before age 18.

Thanks to nearly 2,100 riders and more than 600 volunteers, this year’s Closer to Free Ride raised more than $4 million to support patient care at Smilow Cancer Hospital and research at Yale Cancer Center! Those funds fuel our lifesaving and life-changing work, and we are so grateful! Thank you to all participants and please take a moment to watch this year’s recap video!
