In 2019, Gena Foster, MD, assistant professor of medicine and hematology, connected with a local graduate student through a mentorship website. Shay Taylor-Allen was pursuing her master’s degree at Quinnipiac University with dreams of medical school, but after being rejected from more than 20 programs, she needed guidance to move forward. Dr. Foster helped her rework her application.
At the time, Shay was balancing graduate school with night shifts in environmental services at Yale New Haven Hospital, while also supporting her mother after a house fire.
“I remember talking to her and just being super impressed,” Dr. Foster shared. “She’s so hardworking, she’s so smart, she’s so humble.”
Shay went on to be accepted to Howard University College of Medicine and recently matched at Yale New Haven Hospital. She will soon return to her hometown of New Haven to begin her residency.
Dr. Foster said she is ecstatic that Shay, who has become a mentor to several prospective medical students herself, is coming back to Yale.
“I still can’t really talk about it without tearing up. She’s going to be my colleague. It’s so cool. I’m so excited.”
“I still can’t believe it,” said Shay Taylor-Allen, who landed a residency at Yale New Haven Hospital, where she was born and spent most of her adult life on the cleaning staff.
