When the Adams Neurosciences Center opens at the Saint Raphael Campus in 2027, the number of beds for neurocritical care patients at Yale New Haven Hospital will nearly quadruple. The York Street Campus Neuro Intensive Care Unit (ICU) will remain open, and the Neurosciences Center will have a 28-bed Neuro ICU and a 28-bed Neuro Intermediate Care (stepdown) Unit.

“With a larger footprint across two campuses and a new Intermediate Care Unit, we will be able to provide cutting-edge care to patients from across the state and region throughout their acute-care continuum,” said Emily Gilmore, MD, director, Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit, Yale New Haven Hospital; and clinical chief of Neurocritical Care and Emergency Neurology and professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Yale School of Medicine.

The Neurosciences Center will also expand and enhance existing capabilities in the diagnosis, monitoring and rehabilitation of neurocritical care patients.

“We’ll be able to provide the most advanced, patient-focused care in the state,” Dr. Gilmore said. “This allows us to really tailor our treatment approaches to each patient and provide personalized care.”

Child Passenger Safety Week aims to bring awareness to how parents and caregivers can keep children safe in vehicles.

Counterfeit and non-compliant car seats sold online could put children and babies in harm’s way. These seats may be more common than you might think. Since 2021, Yale New Haven Health staff members have seen an exponential increase in these non-compliant seats at time of discharge from women’s care and NICU units throughout the health system. They are continually making great catches and identifying “red flags” before the patient goes home.

The YNHH Center for Injury & Violence Prevention offers free appointments in Greenwich, New London, New Haven and Bridgeport twice a month at each location. Parents should email carseats@ynhh.org for an appointment or they may also try calling the car seat phone line at 203-200-KIDS (5437). If these locations are not convenient, staff can recommend a seat check location in their immediate or surrounding area.

Fibroids are benign tumors that most commonly grow in the wall of the uterus. About 70% of women are found to have fibroids by the age of 50. However, the exact incidence is unknown.

“Fibroids affect women of all ages, but fibroids grow under the influence of hormones, namely estrogen,” said Yale New Haven Health minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon Angela Qu, DO, assistant professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences at Yale School of Medicine. “So, when women are in their reproductive ages, the fibroids have the potential to grow and become more symptomatic.”

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Shout out to Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital’s oncology nurses who rode for Team Tommy Fund in last weekend’s Closer to Free ride.

We are thankful for Tommy Fund for Childhood Cancer which provides wellness care for our pediatric oncology and hematology patients between our inpatient and outpatient units – as well as coffee and snacks in all of our oncology outpatient areas in the Pediatric Specialty Centers. Most recently, they provided patients with back-to-school supplies and new backpacks.
