When you're doing all the right things to prevent back pain and then you get a flare up...

You're probably wondering, "Why do I even go to the chiropractor??"

Flare ups happen because life keeps happening.

You're getting stronger but stress, poor sleep, carrying all your and your kids' things and sitting hunched over your computer all day can still trigger pain.

And where your body has an injury or trauma is where the pain will show up.

This doesn't erase your progress though.

Compare this idea to your teeth. You may get a cavity even though you brush your teeth every day, but think how much worse your dental health would be without this preventive care.

Prevention work isn't a magic shield.

It doesn't guarantee you will have no pain when your kiddo begs to be picked up 52 times a day or your work proposal, that kept you hunched over your computer for days, is due.

Your consistent small actions over time are building strength and resilience.

Trust the process and remember, without doing this work regularly, these flare ups would happen more frequently and they would be much more severe.

When I have low back pain but I can't get in to my chiropractor today, I do this...

Supine Leg Over Stretch
Lie on the floor, flat on your back.
Arms outstretched to the sides, palms facing the floor.
Bring one knee toward your head to 90 degrees.
Bring knee across your opposite hip to the floor and turn your head away.
Ensure shoulders remain flat on floor during stretch.
Hold this stretch for 20-30 seconds.
Repeat on the other side.
Repeat this stretch 3x on each side.

Small actions over time make a much bigger impact than doing massive action inconsistently.

We often think "health" is about huge interventions, when in reality taking a 10 minute walk twice a day (1 before coffee and 1 after dinner) does more for your health than that ambitious weekend workout you keep planning (but hardly ever actually do).

My low back pain flared up recently (YES! Even Chiropractors get pain!)

Here's what it taught me:

1. Doing the work is so worth it.

It's easy to find excuses and skip the work we know we need to be doing when we're feeling good. But when the flare ups happen (and yes, they are going to happen!), if we're not doing the work, we feel SO MUCH worse!!

2. Prevention isn't perfection - it's preparation.

I still had pain, but my body bounced back faster because of the foundation I'd built. And the same is true for when I get sick...because I do get sick. I'm human too.

3. I've been going too hard lately.

My body is my first signal that I've been pushing myself too hard. Here's what I did to get back on track:

- Chiropractic adjustments (more than my usual frequency)
- Stretching🧘 (again, more than usual)
- Hydration🫗 (more than usual...there's a trend here)
- Icing🧊 (20 minutes to reduce the inflammation)
- Rest😴 (This is hard for me since I love working out AND I'm responsible for everything at home and at work. But it's necessary!)
- Move🤸 (Don't sit too much, this will actually cause you more pain than not!)

Plot Twist: Your chiropractor has back pain too🤫

Last week, following my week away at camp, I experienced low back pain.

The type of pain so many of my patients come in to see me for.

I still feel it, BTW.

And...

I get adjusted, exercise🏋️, eat healthy🥑, drink healthy🫗, get good sleep🛌, and practice mindfulness🧘 regularly.

I do all "the things"...regularly...and I still get low back pain from time to time.

Having back pain myself helps me understand what my patients are going through which allows me to be a more empathetic and effective doctor.

Doing all "the things" doesn't mean you're never going to experience pain or never be sick.

Doing all "the things" means you're committed to doing what YOU can do to be the best that you can.

That's it.

Make the commitment and focus on what you can influence.

Whelp...we're back!

We had a great time at Camp Ripley for MN National Guard Youth Camp.

I biked. I hung out at the lake. I shot archery. I did arts and crafts. I ran in to friends from my military flying days.

W did all that and more.

You're going to just have to believe me because for whatever reason, I can't get any of my pictures off my phone. (photo borrowed from the MNGYC page)

It was a fun week but it's good to be back.

We're out of the office August 4th-8th.
