Phase I expander and braces on the top and bottom.

Why?
When your top jaw is too small, the bottom teeth come in and try to fit under a “too small” palate. So if we want to expand the top enough, sometimes we need to move the bottom teeth too.
🌟The end result is a nice broad smile with space for all of the permanent teeth to erupt.

I’m looking forward to seeing this case in a couple years when the permanent teeth come in!! 🥰

❤️It’s a bittersweet farewell to our assistant Klayre. We are so excited for her as she continues on her path to become a hygienist!!

🌟We were so lucky to have Klayre in our office for almost three years!!! In that time she was also a college student. I am so proud of Klayre and her ongoing commitment to everything she does! We will miss her, but we are cheering you on! ❤️❤️

And just like that, summer break is over and everyone is back to school! This is our first year with all kids in school or daycare! Feeling all the things, but mostly excited and grateful to watch these three grow up!

🔥As my 9 year old would say…SLAY!!!

👩🏻‍⚕️I will always review pros and cons of each case.
In this case we could have waited to treat until all of the permanent teeth were in, but we opted to address the upper alignment now, with the understanding of that they will likely still need a phase II.

🌟Goals: alignment of teeth, improved esthetics and confidence for the child.

😍Check out the before and after of the palate!

**Most of the time we do a phase I for reasons that cannot wait, severe crowding, crossbites, growth restrictions. Sometimes families opt to do it purely for esthetics.

This teen had a Crossbite!
🤓A Crossbite is when the top jaw is too small, and so the teeth come together with the bottom on the outside, rather than the top. (See before picture 🙂)

With an expander and clear aligners we were able to widen the top jaw, and create an ideal bite!

There is a small window of time for the expanders. By age 15 it starts to become more difficult to expand and sometimes impossible.

Ideally we correct crossbites when kids are 7 or 8 to allow for better growth, which is why we recommend all kids see the orthodontist at that time!

👩🏻‍⚕️All orthodontists are dentists, but not all dentists are orthodontists.
🤓On average, it takes 10 1/2 years of college to become an orthodontist! I would do it all over again to be able to do what I do everyday!
