Today, we honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the first responders who continue to live with its lasting health effects.

We’re proud to share the story of retired NYPD officer William Giammarino, who served at Ground Zero and later developed a 9/11-related illness that required a double lung transplant. With the support of the WTC Health Program and the expertise of our transplant team at North Shore University Hospital, he received a successful transplant in September 2024 that gave him not just new lungs, but a new life.

His resilience is a powerful reminder of the ongoing health impact of 9/11 and the importance of continuing to care for and advocate on behalf of those who served.

Gun violence is the leading cause of death for kids and teens in the U.S.—and we’re committed to changing that.

Our team hosted a Gun Violence Prevention awareness event focused on education, advocacy, and healing. Team members wore orange, and Dr. Sathya and Dr. Prince spoke about our hospital’s national leadership in addressing this crisis.

The Gun Violence Prevention and Emergency Department teams received the 2025 Northwell Wear Orange Award for Excellence in Firearm Injury and Mortality Prevention Programming and Patient Care.

To honor lives lost to gun violence, heartfelt messages were written and hung from a tree, donated by BrightView, that will soon be planted near our Emergency Department as a symbol of remembrance and hope. 🌳🧡
