A day in the life of our facility dogs, Dutton and Quinny. 🐾💛

From unit to unit, they bring comfort, ease fears, and share snuggles with patients and team members across Cohen Children’s Medical Center.

Quinny spends time visiting patients on Med 4 with Stacy and Mikayla, and PACT with Marianne, while Dutton makes rounds in the PICU with Emily, PAV with Kelly, and 3 Central with Erin—spreading plenty of smiles wherever they go.

Beyond the cuddles, these dogs help patients achieve specific care goals, with each dog-handler team creating adaptive, individualized support for every patient.

We’re so grateful for Dutton, Quinny, and their incredible handlers for all they do to make our hospital a brighter, happier place.

Calder Memorial Trophy winner! 🏆👏 A huge congratulations to Matthew Schaefer on a standout rookie season and this well-deserved honor.

Beyond his success on the ice, Matthew continues to make an impact through his partnership with Northwell Health — helping bring comfort, joy, and support to families facing cancer in honor of his late mother, Jennifer. 💙🧡

We’re proud to celebrate this achievement and grateful for the hope and positivity he continues to bring to our community.

Having a baby in the neonatal intensive care unit is scary. Now imagine there’s a language barrier keeping you from getting updates on your baby's health.

After experiencing pregnancy complications, Maria delivered her daughter, Cristhine, at 26 weeks with Monique Jones, MD, Associate Chief of Labor and Delivery at Katz Women’s Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center. This marked the beginning of an unexpected NICU journey. As she coped with her daughter’s hospitalization, a language barrier heightened her fears and made it difficult to understand what was happening.

To ensure families can access their child’s care in their preferred language, Deirdre Casey, RN, BSN, staff nurse in the NICU at Cohen Children's Medical Center, created the NICU SPEAKS program.

“While we are very good at using translation services in person, and we call families with updates, I noticed we had a communication gap. Families couldn’t easily call us,” said Casey. “The NICU SPEAKS project filled that gap. It gives the power to communicate with us to the families.”

NICU SPEAKS currently has dedicated phone lines in Spanish, Mandarin, Russian, and Bengali and is expanding to 10 languages. This service provided Maria with guidance, companionship and a voice when hers felt limited. Being able to communicate with Cristhine’s care team helped Maria during a vulnerable time. Today, Christine is doing well and will be on her way home soon.

Happy Mother's Day to Maria and all the mothers celebrating!

Mother's Day may be over, but we're not done celebrating, not when it comes to our tiniest NICU fighters. Behind every isolette, every monitor, every small but mighty heartbeat, is a mother whose love is bigger than any obstacle. Thank you moms, today, tomorrow, and always. 💛

The cutest warrior we’ve ever seen! 🥰

Hayliana was born with a rare primary immune deficiency, facing repeated infections and a long road to diagnosis. She spent three months on Med 4, went through a bone marrow transplant that didn’t succeed, and then faced a second, highly complex haplo-identical bone marrow transplant.

With the support of her care team — including immunology specialist Vincent Bonagura, MD, and her hematology and oncology team, including Joel Brochstein, MD, and Jonathan Fish, MD — that second transplant was a success.

“The kindness and support we experienced on that floor, from each and every person, was unmatched. We are so thankful for the love and support through the hardest days,” her father shared. “Our little warrior is getting ready to go to Disney, celebrate her 4th birthday, and start school this fall. We are beyond grateful for the care we received.”

Now, more than two years later, she’s thriving and living her best life. We can’t wait to continue watching her grow. 💪
