Today is International Stress Awareness Day. Stress is unavoidable and plays a large role in the state of our mental health. It is a part of life, so completely avoiding it or removing it from our lives is not possible, but our ability to healthily manage stress determines our success in weathering life’s storms. So today I would like you to think about how stress is affecting you, and what you are doing to mitigate it. There are the well-known things that you can do, like diet, exercise, and rest; but I encourage you to find something that you can add to your routine that is specific to you as an individual. One of mine is being artistic. Whether it is making seasonal décor, coloring, or crocheting, I love an opportunity to engage in some arts and craft time.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, so I want to take a moment and talk to you about your mental health. Life has its ups and downs, and it is only natural that your mood fluctuates as well. But just because it is normal for you to have times that you may feel down, doesn’t mean you should ignore it. Check in with yourself regularly and devote some time to taking care of yourself. Talk to family or friends about what’s going on, write in a journal to help you self-reflect, take a nap, exercise; these are just a few things that you can do to help you better cope with whatever life is throwing at you. But if you find that you are stuck in a negative space and aren’t able to work through it, there is nothing wrong with seeking some assistance from a therapist. They are there to help. Just know that you are not alone.

Take care of yourself.

Change isn’t comfortable. In order to make positive changes you must do what doesn’t feel natural, if what feels natural isn’t working for you. It’s important to give yourself time to acclimate to the change before you decide that it’s not working just because you don’t feel comfortable with it yet. Comfort will come later, if you are consistent. Consistency allows you to get used to the change so that, in time, it feels natural to you. So remember, if you want to make positive changes, you must constantly do what is uncomfortable until it becomes comfortable. So hang in there, don’t give up yet.

How did you sleep last night? It’s Sleep Awareness Week, so now is the perfect time to pay attention to the quality of your sleep. Getting appropriate rest is important for overall health, but it also is a factor in your mental health. Lack of sleep can cause us to perceive and react to situations in a way that are different from what we would have if we were well rested. Lack of sleep can cause us to be irritable and reactive, which can create issues in our social life and also increase feelings of anxiety and depression. Life happens, and sometimes it’s difficult to get a good nights sleep, but being a little more intentional when you can, can lead to improvement in your overall functioning which will have a direct effect on your quality of life. So get some more sleep and see how you feel.

April is National Counseling Awareness Month. Seeking counseling can seem taboo to some, but it is important that we continue to talk about mental health and the importance of self-care if we hope to change that. Talking to a mental health professional does not make you “crazy” or “weak”. Everyone needs someone to talk to sometimes. If you feel like you could use some help with some things you are struggling with, call a therapist in your area and have a consultation. They will be able to answer the questions you may have, if therapy is new to you. If you don’t know where to start, try Psychologytoday.com; there you will be able to see some therapists in your area. Let’s erase the stigma.

Is this you? Do you struggle with catastrophic thinking? Catastrophizing is a stealer of joy. It causes you to worry and ruminate on a situation that is seemingly small as if it were a large problem or a crisis. This type of thinking keeps you feeling anxious and unsettled. In order to combat catastrophic thinking it is important to take control of your thoughts.

In order to do that you need to identify if the thought is rational or irrational. This basically means that you are seeing if the thought is based in truth or fear. You figure this out by asking yourself what’s the worst that can happen, and the likelihood of that extreme taking place. What will also be helpful is to use your experiences as data, so that you can use it to help you identify the invalidity of the irrational thought.

Why is it easier for us to assume the worst will happen and not the best? Both are not likely, yet we choose to focus on the negative possibility. If you are someone who immediately assumes the worst in any given situation, I encourage you to ask yourself, “What if it works out?”.

We are taught to try our best, and put our best foot forward; which is a good rule of thumb. But where does this ideal become problematic? How do we tell the difference between having all of our ducks in a row and perfectionism?

In order to reveal the answer to that, you need to ask yourself some questions:

Is what you are waiting for a need or a want?

Is what you are waiting for something that that you can hold off on for a little while, but still function fine without it?

Do you keep delaying something because you keep finding reasons why it is not ready?

If what you are waiting for is a need, then it is just that you wait until you have completed it before you move forward. But if it is a want, and you can still make progress without it, then that can be limiting. Perfectionism is procrastination in disguise. We all have trouble with this from time to time, but it is important to be mindful of it so that you are not holding yourself back. There is nothing wrong with preparation, but at some point, one has to take a step forward and see what happens. You won’t know if you will succeed until you try.
