Acupuncture helps for back pain
It’s estimated that 8 out of 10 Americans will experience back pain at some time in their life. For many, it will be related to a specific incident and clear up on its own, but for many the pain will become a chronic, life-long issue. While conventional medicine has a variety of treatments to help with the pain while the back heals, too often they fail to relieve the problem enough for the patient to resume their pre-injury life. A large proportion of cases fall in between the “it’s minor and just needs some rest’’ stage and the “so severe that surgery is required/appropriate” stage. For those folks especially, acupuncture is a great solution to what can be a life-altering condition.
How does Acupuncture work for back pain?
There are multiple areas on the human body that, when stimulated by the insertion of fine needles, create a response that reduces back pain, calms muscle spasms, and reduces inflammation; helping the injured/compromised tissues heal and strengthen themselves. A trained Acupuncturist can locate the specific ones that will work for a given patient and stimulate them gently and safely to bring pain relief where it is needed.
Studies have shown that this therapy is helpful in reducing pain by stimulating the central nervous system, releasing opioid-like substances and endorphins, and increasing circulation to support the tissues around an injury. It has far fewer side effects and risks than many other treatments available.
How many treatments does it take?
Depending on how long one has had back pain, how severe it is, and one’s general health, most people experience noticeable decrease in pain levels within 2-3 treatments. Some people require more (8-10 or so) treatments to significantly effect pain levels. Some patients use Acupuncture periodically (every month or so) after the pain has decreased to maintain their level of comfort.
Over the years, I have treated many cases of back pain and they have responded very well to Acupuncture as a treatment. If you, or someone you know is experiencing back pain, Acupuncture could help.
