Acupuncture helps for back pain

It’s estimated that 8 out of 10 Americans will experience back pain at some time in their life. For many, it will be related to a specific incident and clear up on its own, but for many the pain will become a chronic, life-long issue. While conventional medicine has a variety of treatments to help with the pain while the back heals, too often they fail to relieve the problem enough for the patient to resume their pre-injury life. A large proportion of cases fall in between the “it’s minor and just needs some rest’’ stage and the “so severe that surgery is required/appropriate” stage. For those folks especially, acupuncture is a great solution to what can be a life-altering condition.

How does Acupuncture work for back pain?
There are multiple areas on the human body that, when stimulated by the insertion of fine needles, create a response that reduces back pain, calms muscle spasms, and reduces inflammation; helping the injured/compromised tissues heal and strengthen themselves. A trained Acupuncturist can locate the specific ones that will work for a given patient and stimulate them gently and safely to bring pain relief where it is needed.
Studies have shown that this therapy is helpful in reducing pain by stimulating the central nervous system, releasing opioid-like substances and endorphins, and increasing circulation to support the tissues around an injury. It has far fewer side effects and risks than many other treatments available.

How many treatments does it take?
Depending on how long one has had back pain, how severe it is, and one’s general health, most people experience noticeable decrease in pain levels within 2-3 treatments. Some people require more (8-10 or so) treatments to significantly effect pain levels. Some patients use Acupuncture periodically (every month or so) after the pain has decreased to maintain their level of comfort.

Over the years, I have treated many cases of back pain and they have responded very well to Acupuncture as a treatment. If you, or someone you know is experiencing back pain, Acupuncture could help. Do you suffer from seasonal allergies? Acupuncture can help.

Spring in Wisconsin is always so long-awaited that it’s easy to forget some of its pitfalls – until they happen. I’m talking about those seasonal allergies; the stuffy head, runny nose, itchy eyes and sneezing that hits too many of us just as nature starts popping all the lovely colors of spring buds and blossoms. Don’t you just wish there was a solution to these without having to take continuous antihistamines?

Acupuncture can help with seasonal allergies. Much of China is a temperate zone like Wisconsin and the Midwest, so there is a ton of knowledge on how to deal with, reduce, and prevent those annoying allergies and their symptoms.

Chinese Medicine views the body’s health as balanced functioning of different organ systems. These can either be deficient (weak) or excessive (overactive). In the case of allergies, an excess issue talks about the immune system overreacting to particles in the air that really aren’t that harmful. A deficiency problem is one where the body has a weakness in its ability to deal with external substances and so has unreasonable reactions to even the smallest irritant.

Your acupuncturist is trained to learn from your body’s signs and symptoms which case you are in (possibly a little of both!) and to select the right points on your body to start attacking the problem from both a short- and long-term view. In the short-term, points are selected that help calm down your immune system, reduce inflamed tissues in the eyes, nose and throat and reduce phlegm production. Long term, the underlying deficiency or excess can be addressed to prevent future episodes from being so extreme or possibly eliminate them.

Your Lung* system is one of the main systems we will address. The Lungs in Chinese Medicine theory rule not only the nasal passages but our skin as well. They are our first line of-defense against outside substances and, when imbalanced, let in things they should not, or just over produces protective reactions when they are triggered. A balanced Lung system will effectively protect the body from outside influences without going into a major attack over seamingly minor irritants.

The Spleen* system in Chinese medial theory regulates our fluids as well as digestive functions. It is responsible for the creation and movement of clear or “dirty” fluids in the body and as such, has a lot to do with the production of phlegm. A weak or imbalanced Spleen system will allow the body to make way too much phlegm at times.

Strengthening and balancing these two organs enables us to react more normally to outside allergens when we come across them. Couple this with some acute care to decrease symptoms you may already be having and it’s a great solution to an issue far too many of us suffer through each year.

Call now 920-982-6064 or schedule online at www.relaxwithus.us and see for yourself how this amazing medicine can help you feel better and look forward to the changing seasons!

*Lung and Spleen are capitalized here because Chinese Medicine often speaks of the organs as having different properties than those we know in “modern” medicine. The terms are used to fit into that logic system.
