Ledge Light Health District – LLHD – serves as the local health department for East Lyme, Groton, Ledyard, New London, North Stonington, Old Lyme, Stonington, and Waterford, Connecticut. As a health district, formed under Connecticut General Statutes Section 19a-241, LLHD is a special unit of government, allowing member municipalities to provide comprehensive public health services to residents in

a more efficient manner by consolidating the services within one organization. The Director of Health and staff of LLHD work to promote health and wellness among more than 151,000 residents we serve. There are currently no swimming advisories or closures in effect at any LLHD-monitored beaches.

Ledge Light Health District conducted routine bathing water sampling on Wednesday, July 16, and all bathing water sample results were below the bacterial action levels set by the State of Connecticut.

Gorton Pond, East Shore (South), Esker Point, Green Harbor Beach, Hawk's Neck Beach, and Point O' Woods were placed under a swimming advisory on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, and re-sampled on Wednesday, July 16. Results were within acceptable limits, and the advisories were lifted on July 17.

Swimming advisories are currently in effect for the following areas:
• Gorton Pond in East Lyme
• East Shore (South) and Esker Point in Groton
• Green Harbor Beach in New London
• Hawk's Neck Beach and Point O' Woods in Old Lyme

Ledge Light Health District conducted routine bathing water sampling on Monday, July 14, 2025. The areas listed above showed sample results exceeding the bacterial action level set by the State of Connecticut and were posted with swimming advisories on July 15. Resamples will be drawn on Wednesday, July 16.

Giants Neck Beach (West) in East Lyme was placed under an advisory on Tuesday, July 8, 2025. A resample was drawn on Monday, July 14. The result was within acceptable limits, and the advisory was lifted on Tuesday, July 15.

PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT

BAT TESTS POSITIVE FOR RABIES IN EAST LYME

A BAT FOUND ON BOSTON POST ROAD IN THE TOWN OF EAST LYME WAS TESTED AND FOUND TO BE POSITIVE FOR RABIES ON JULY 10, 2025. THE PUBLIC SHOULD REFRAIN FROM FEEDING OR APPROACHING ANY WILD OR STRAY ANIMALS.

Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that can infect all warm-blooded animals, including people. It is spread mostly by wild animals, but stray cats and dogs may also become infected and spread the virus. The rabies virus lives in the saliva and brain tissue of infected animals. Rabies can be spread by scratches from infected animals or when infected saliva comes into contact with open wounds, breaks in the skin or mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth, etc.)

A swimming advisory is currently in effect for Giants Neck Beach (West) in East Lyme.

Ledge Light Health District conducted routine bathing water sampling on Monday, July 7, 2025. Giants Neck Beach (West) in East Lyme showed sample results exceeding the bacterial action level set by the State of Connecticut for bacteria. Giants Neck Beach (West) was placed under an advisory on Tuesday, July 8. A re-sample will be drawn on Wednesday, July 9.

Measles is highly contagious that can easily spread among unvaccinated individuals, particularly those who have traveled within the last 21 days.

Heads up - it could get wild out there over the next 24 hours! Heat and heavy rain advisories are in place for today into early tomorrow. While it’s possible the worst of it will miss us, models show we could be impacted by thunderstorms with very heavy rainfall around 1am. Public health implications of storms like this include:
*Heat exhaustion and heat stroke;
*Injury from downed trees and power lines;
*Compromised septic systems and wells from localized flooding;
*Food safety issues from loss of power;
Be safe, check on your neighbors, and call us if you need support!
