On 4/22/2025 we conducted a mock DUI for Oak Glen High School prior to their prom. We'd like to thank New Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department, Hancock County Sheriff's Departmen (Chance Weyand), Lifeteam EMS , and Six Recycling (Greg Six II) for helping to put this on for the students. It's just another way for us to be involved with the communities we serve. Special thanks to Jeremiah Cole and Justin Shaw for also volunteering to help out this year.

New Manchester ( Station 5) was requested for mutual aid to a brush fire on Bell Hill Rd. Concurrently, New Cumberland (Station 9) and Oakland District (Station 8) was on another brush fire on Turkey Foot Rd. Squad 51, supported by Mule 5 and 4 personnel, Tanker 55, 2 personnel, and Engine 56, 4 personnel, responded within minutes. Upon arrival, 51 encountered a fire spanning approximately 1 acre, fueled by strong winds. The deployment of Mule 5 effectively halted the fire's progress within 5 minutes. New Cumberland VFD personnel provided additional support on scene, while Newell VFD was toned but returned to service before arriving on scene.

As a reminder, it is forest fire season, so please obey the law and no open fires! Additionally, the warm dry weather has increased fire risk. All of Hancock County and surrounding areas are under a Fire Weather Watch tomorrow, Wednesday, March 19. Please do not burn!!!! Conditions are the perfect storm for a fast-moving wildfire than can get out of control in minutes.

If you wonder how the funding that the Hancock County Commission is cutting will have an impact on services, here is our budget for this year. We cannot speak for the other departments affected, but their budgets are likely similar. The yellow highlighted items are required expenses just to keep the doors open. Insurance, maintenance and testing, and accounting services are all requirements either by law or government mandate.

Those items alone make up $47,900 of our budget. None of that money accounts for replacing equipment, keeping turnout gear and equipment up to current (required) standards, training, and other costs.

03/13/2025

We have just learned that the Hancock County Commission, under the leadership of Eron Chek, has decided to cut 34% of the funding to all the volunteer fire departments in the county. Such drastic measures will have devastating effects on the departments' ability to provide fire protection, rescue, EMS, and other services to our communities.

Please show your support at today's county commission meeting at 2:30 or calling, writing, and making your opinion known to our county commissioners - the ones we elected to keep our county running safely and efficiently.

While Jim Justice may have seen fit to lift the statewide burning ban issued just over a week ago, the less-than-one-inch of rain we received over the past two days is not nearly enough to mitigate the abnormally dry conditions we have experienced over the past couple months. PLEASE, especially for the sake of the firefighters who have to respond to extinguish these brush fires, DO NOT BURN! If you feel that you must, please follow the laws set forth, including NO BURNING UNTIL AFTER 5pm and having a TEN FOOT BARRIER STRIP around what you are burning.
