Temperate rainforest in Idaho you say? Absolutely. I photographed this moody scene in a gorgeous grove (DeVoto) of Giant Red Cedars in the The Lochsa Research Natural Area (RNA). My brother-in-law Jeff Bailey and I made consecutive daily drives from Seeley Lake MT, all the way into eastern Idaho for well over 400 total miles all told. I photographed this scene on the second day we investigated, providing us with damp overcast conditions and a nice misty atmosphere.


This inland rainforest, and example of a Coastal Disjunct community, stretches over 700 miles - from central Idaho all the way to Prince George, British Columbia. It's quite overwhelming navigating within a spacious grove of massive trees that some of which, have existed for over 2000 years and continue to thrive. The first day we arrived, it took me a while to readjust for seeking scenes and powerful compositions within the grove. After a short overnight nap - my mind was cleared and focused, and we hit the road several hours before dawn to get back to work.
