Psychologist and couple's therapist Stan Tatkin teaches that every couple has thirds: the people, passions, and endeavors that live outside of our partnership. Friends. Work. Hobbies. Family. Screens. These are all examples of “thirds.” They’re not bad in themselves, they’re necessary and healthy. Thirds help us stay balanced and connected to others and to our desires. They can give us outlets, a sense of accomplishment and pride and community beyond our relationship....

We all want to be seen. Not necessarily agreed with, not instantly fixed — just seen. Heard. Understood. In couples therapy, I often watch partners wrestle with how to respond when the other is in pain. They rush to defensiveness or advice. Research by John Gottman found that couples who divorced had more negative interactions and less positive interactions at the start of their conversations compared to those who stayed married over six years. How couples begin their conflict conversation matters. Couples who were harsher and negative in the first few minutes of their conversations were less likely to stay married . one of the skills that we teach couples is how to use a softened approach when beginning hard conversations. It matters ! ❤️
