In 1990, the U.S. began to recognize November as Native American and Indigenous Heritage Month. This time is an opportunity for all Americans to reflect on the achievements made by our continent’s first peoples: Native Americans, Alaskan Natives and Hawaiian Natives.

Here are just a few who have left a significant mark on healthcare:
• Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte was the first Native American woman in the U.S. to receive a medical degree.
• Susie Walking Bear Yellowtail was the first Crow person to become a registered nurse. In 1962, she was awarded the President’s Award for Outstanding Nursing by President John F. Kennedy.
• Dr. Annie Dodge Wauneka authored an English-Navajo medical dictionary to help providers communicate better with patients.
• Dr. Lori Arviso Alvord became the first Navajo woman board-certified surgeon.

There are many more to recognize. The common thread is that all of them saw a need in their community and stepped up to serve. May we all do the same.

Through education and awareness, we seek to ensure that healthcare supports all communities.

Freedom Day. Jubilee Day. Emancipation Day. Juneteenth.
On June 19, 1865, the last group of Black Americans were released from slavery. Want to know more? Check out the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture (https://nmaahc.si.edu/) for info on the history of Juneteenth and how conversations about race shape our society.

As AMSURG observes Juneteenth, we affirm our commitment to a better future that is focused on justice and equality – in healthcare and the world. 🌎 ⚖️

Did you know colonoscopy is used for both detection and prevention of colorectal cancer? During this procedure, doctors can find colon cancer even if a person hasn’t experienced symptoms, and they can remove growths called polyps before they have a chance to develop into cancer. If you are 45 or older, talk to your doctor about getting screened.
