The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.
— William James

Easier said than done, right?

“The fact that human beings do not just passively receive life events, but instead we selectively perceive, constantly interpret, automatically judge, and sometimes unwittingly create our own reality has been central to traditions that, for centuries, have emphasized mindfulness and centering practices….
Choosing one thought over another is less about replacing negative thoughts with positive ones and more about recognizing the power of interpretation in general.
One of the most basic ways we see this play out is with something called your locus of control. When it comes to particular stressors in your life, you likely have an assumption about how much you can decrease or escape them. If you have a lower locus of control in general, this means you don’t believe you have much influence over your environment or your stressors. Those with a higher locus of control in general tend to assume more responsibility over their environment.” — Dr. Lisa Finlay

Breathing isn't only essential to
keep us alive, it also impacts our emotions, attention, and how our brains process the world around us. New evidence demonstrates that the act of breathing exerts a substantive, rhythmic influence on perception, emotion, and cognition.

We do not use the body to get into a pose – we use the pose to get into our body.
~ Bernie Clarke

The psychological benefits, such as increased mindfulness, interoceptive awareness, attention regulation, and self-acceptance are linked to decreases in stress, dysfunctional coping, and avoidance. These improvements have been seen in a study on Trauma Sensitive Yoga as a complementary treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder.

Your sankalpa is like deeply sown seed of resolution that you plant deep inside your being. You connect with it and silently speak this resolution to yourself — stating it as if it has already come to fruition.
— Raegan Robinson

Sankalpa is often an aspect to Yoga Nidra. Curious?

Come to our workshop on October 9th from 1:30pm pst - 3:30pm pst.

In this workshop we will also explore:
• What Yoga Nidra is
• How the practice works
• How Yoga Nidra differs from mediation
• Benefits of practicing Yoga Nidra
• How to set up for practice

And then we experience a full Yoga Nidra practice!

Traditionally, Yoga Nidra is practiced in a reclined supine position, but the most important thing is to give your body support to release into. You may choose to practice on a sofa, bed, or seated in a comfy chair rather than your yoga mat ---- and that is 100% fine. You will be walked through some options for your practice. The goal is to make yourself as comfortable and supported as possible.

Suggestions for workshop (nothing is mandatory):
• Yoga Mat
• Water to keep hydrated
• Eye Mask or something soft to put over your eyes will help you relax deeper
• Blanket (or two) so you can get extra comfy and keep warm
• Pillow or bolster for under your knees (optional but nice for lower back support) or to support and pamper the back

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.
But achieving true peace entails much more than laying down arms. It requires the building of societies where all members feel that they can flourish. It involves creating a world in which people are treated equally, regardless of their race.

APPLY WITHIN

You once told me
You wanted to find
Yourself in the world -
And I told you to
First apply within,
To discover the world
within you.

You once told me
You wanted to save
The world from all its wars -
And I told you to
First save yourself
From the world,
And all the wars
You put yourself
Through.

Why practice yoga and meditation?

When you do yoga, your brain cells develop new connections, and changes occur in brain structure as well as function, resulting in improved cognitive skills, such as learning and memory. Yoga strengthens parts of the brain that play a key role in memory, attention, awareness, thought, and language.

IPATH®
Integral Postural Alignment Therapeutics is a necessary practice that owes its success to its simplicity.

There's no secret poor posture plays a huge role in chronic back pain. Getting to the root of the issue might sound complex, but it isn’t.

The IPATH® Method was born with the idea that yoga poses and restorative rest, when kept simple, works! The results have shown how, over time, the IPATH® Method has long term, measurable benefits.

The beautiful thing about yoga is that there are so many different approaches. As we go through our life cycles, hopefully we are able to find a practice that suits us. And if you practice yoga long enough, that will change many times. What exactly that looks like is going to be different for each person.

This quote holds especially true for fascia but it is possible to re-pattern the fascial system.

Did you know that it takes at least 90 seconds before we begin to lengthen and open the body?

Fascia runs through everything in our bodies and takes time to release and lengthen. Our bodies can relax into this process but we must be patient and listen to the signs of our body sends. The listening is important, because fascia works differently than muscle. We cannot force it — it must be slow, gentle, and sustained. This, combined with the breath, allows the body to relax and helps activate the parasympathetic system. These signals communicate that it is safe for the body to relax, release, and lengthen.

The less activation, forcing, and stress in body (activating the sympathetic nervous system), the more our bodies can let go and open. This is how we begin to lengthen, re-train, re-pattern our fascial system.
