Many of our customers have heard about the bill in our Louisiana legislature, HB358, which concerns many independent as well as chain pharmacies. This very important piece of legislation would absolutely put fair business practices back into the pharmacy business. The biggest player in this is CVS Health. This is the umbrella company that owns CVS pharmacy and their pharmacy benefits manger or PBM, CVS/Caremark. The unfair practices of the PBM, as it is now, is that it steers patients to their pharmacy (CVS) and away from other pharmacies. They also pay themselves significantly more than what they reimburse all other pharmacies, many times less than the wholesale cost of the medication. Many pharmacies lose money and this causes pharmacies to lay off employees and even close. This unfair practice has caused many independent (Mom and Pop) pharmacies, Walgreens, and Rite Aids to close stores across the nation. By passing this bill, it would lead to fair pricing and reimbursement to all pharmacies, independent and chain. By separating the PBM from the pharmacy ownership, it would lead to fair pricing and reimbursement to all pharmacies, independent and chain (Walmart, Walgreens, and many others). CVS store closings would only be because of corporate decision making. The CVS company wants to keep the PBM so they can dictate pricing, force less competition, and make more money by driving out competition.

This bill is about fair pricing and reimbursements to all pharmacies, not just the ones owned by the PBM. With the passing of this bill, all will benefit.
