Today’s Grand Rounds welcomed L. Renee Hilton, MD, our R. Davilene Carter Lectureship speaker, for a powerful and timely discussion:
“Access, Advocacy, and a Call to Action: What Is the Role of the Surgeon?”

Dr. Hilton is the Chief of Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery and an Associate Professor at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University Medical Center, and serves as Director of Bariatric Surgery and the Center for Obesity and Metabolism. A nationally recognized leader in surgical quality, she challenged us to think beyond the operating room and reflect on our responsibility as surgeons, educators, and advocates for equitable, patient-centered care.

Her remarks embodied the leadership, mentorship, and purpose that define the R. Davilene Carter Lectureship.

Benny’s story is one of determination, innovation, and the kind of teamwork that makes extraordinary outcomes possible.

Last night, WWLTV’s Meg Farris featured his journey, from multiple cardiac arrests and weeks in a coma to receiving a lifesaving heart transplant, highlighting the power of advanced therapies and coordinated care led by Tulane Doctors in partnership with LCMC Health.

With surgical leadership from Dr. Jamil Borgi, our Division Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and advanced heart failure expertise from Dr. Sasha Vukelic, Benny had a team behind him that never stopped fighting. Because of them, he’s here today to share his story.

"This is one of the most complex cases we ever did, either here or in New York,” said Dr. Sasha Vukelic, Vice Chair for Cardiology at Tulane.
