Connecting, collaborating, and continuing the conversation around bariatric care.⚕️

Earlier this week, Tulane Surgery participated in a city-wide bariatric Journal Club hosted through the Louisiana Chapter of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Dr. Shauna Levy joined fellow members of the Tulane MIS/Bariatric division, residents, and colleagues from across the region for a time of discussion, education, and collaboration in metabolic and bariatric surgery. 👏

A huge congratulations to all graduates of the Tulane University School of Medicine Class of 2026! 👏

Earning an MD is no small feat, and we are incredibly proud of the hard work, resilience, sacrifice, and determination it took each of you to reach this milestone.

The Department of Surgery would also like to give a very special shoutout to Ali Campbell (AKA Dr. Campbell! 🎓), recipient of this year’s Gold Scalpel Award.

Presented annually by the Department of Surgery, the Gold Scalpel Award recognizes a graduating senior who demonstrates exceptional promise for a future academic career in surgery.

Ali recently matched into General Surgery at the University of Florida, and we could not be more excited to see all that lies ahead for her.

Congratulations again to Ali and to the entire Tulane School of Medicine graduating class! 💚🌊

Celebrating the next chapter! ✨

Our Trauma & Acute Care Surgery team recently came together at Herbsaint for a special farewell dinner honoring our graduating chief residents and Dr. Taylor Wearda.

After years of long hours, challenging cases, teamwork, and growth together, it was special for them to spend time together outside the hospital celebrating everything they’ve all accomplished.

Congratulations to this incredible group. We are so proud of all you’ve accomplished and can’t wait to see what’s ahead for each of you!

Dr. Anil Paramesh is taking on a pretty unique challenge this summer…🐷

This July, Dr. Paramesh will serve as a candidate for the American Diabetes Association’s annual Kiss a Pig Gala, helping raise critical funds to support diabetes research, advocacy, education, and patient resources throughout Louisiana and beyond.

Why “Kiss a Pig”? Before modern synthetic insulin, insulin derived from pigs helped save the lives of countless people living with diabetes. The event honors that history while raising awareness and support for the ongoing fight against a disease that affects hundreds of thousands of Louisianians.

As a transplant surgeon, Dr. Paramesh sees firsthand the serious impact chronic disease can have on patients and families every day, making this mission especially meaningful.

We’re proud to support Dr. Paramesh and the American Diabetes Association® in their efforts to create a healthier future for our community.

This week, we’re celebrating the incredible nurses and nurse practitioners who are such an essential part of Tulane Surgery.

From the clinic to the OR and everywhere in between, thank you for the compassion, expertise, and care you bring to our patients every single day. We’re also so grateful for our amazing clinical partners who work alongside us to make that care possible.

This year’s National Nurses Week theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” couldn’t be more true.

Thank you for all that you do! 💚

Tulane Surgery was well-represented last week at the 2026 Annual Surgical Education Week in Atlanta!

From leading conversations about medical education to presenting impactful work in surgical training, our team continues to contribute to the future of surgical education.

👏 Shoutout to our research fellow, James Pai, for leading a medical student panel on AI, and to Dr. Cathy Luo for her presentation on our IMPRESS program.

We’re also excited to share that Caroline Rhodes, our Senior Manager of Surgery Education, will be taking on the role of ASE’s Chair of the Coordinators Committee for 2026!

Saving lives starts here.

As Donate Life Month comes to a close, we’re proud to highlight the impact of organ donation through the work of Dr. Anil Paramesh, Division Chief of Abdominal Transplant Surgery and Medical Director of LOPA - Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency

In this segment of Tulane Med Insider, Dr. Paramesh shares how transplantation changes lives and reflects the generosity of donors who make it possible.

This work doesn’t happen without donors, families, and an incredible team behind the scenes. We’re grateful for our transplant team, who show up every day to make second chances happen.

We celebrated our administrative team for Administrative Professionals Day last week…and again this week! 😎

If everything feels like it’s running smoothly…this group is why.

So much of what keeps our offices, clinics, and teams going happens behind the scenes, and it doesn’t go unnoticed. We’re incredibly grateful for the dedication, care, and positive energy this group brings every day.

Huge thank you to our department leadership for treating us to a special lunch. We felt the love and appreciation (again)! 💚💙

Moments like this matter!

PGY-1 Dr. Kelly Sokevitz presented her work in Toronto at the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Annual Meeting focusing on optimizing mechanical circulatory support in a post-CABG patient.

With mentorship from Dr. Aabha Divya and support to help make opportunities like this possible, this is what early training looks like at Tulane: real cases, real research, and real experience on an international stage. 👏
