An allergy occurs when your body’s natural defenses overreact to exposure to a particular substance, treating it as an invader and sending out chemicals to defend against it. While any food can cause an adverse reaction, eight types of food account for about 90 percent of all reactions: Eggs, Milk and Dairy, Peanuts, Tree nuts, Fish, Shellfish, Wheat, Soy, and Sesame.

Hollywood filmmaker and actor Dustin Hoffman is renowned for his roles in Rain Man and Kramer vs. Kramer. The Hollywood great has enjoyed enduring success over the years but also faced a personal health battle. The 84-year-old survived a battle with an undisclosed type of cancer that he kept private. Dustin was 75 when he was treated for cancer. Cancer Research shows that the chances of cancer increase with age, with more than half of cancers being diagnosed in people aged 50 to 74. Dustin is feeling great and is in good health,” the two-time Oscar winner planned to undergo “doctor-recommended preventative treatments to minimize the chance of a recurrence in years to come.” However, Hoffman chose to keep his battle private. Others, like Michael Douglas, decide to go public. Douglas has done a lot to raise awareness and destigmatize throat cancer.

The allergen-specific IgE antibody test is a blood test used to help diagnose an allergy to a specific substance or substance for a person with acute or chronic allergy-like symptoms. This is especially true if symptoms are recurrent and appear to be tied to triggers, such as exposures to particular foods or environments, and if other family members are known to have allergies.

What’s the difference between being allergic to a food and being sensitive or intolerant to it? The difference between a food allergy and sensitivity is the body’s response. When you have a food allergy, your immune system causes the reaction. If you have a food sensitivity or intolerance, the digestive system triggers the reaction, and an intolerance is characterized by the body lacking a chemical or enzyme needed to digest a particular food.

Carrier screening is a type of genetic test that can tell you whether you carry a gene for certain genetic disorders. Doing it before or during pregnancy allows you to find out your chances of having a child with a genetic disorder. Carrier screening involves testing a saliva sample from the inside of the cheek. Test results can be negative (you do not have the gene) or positive (you do have the gene). Typically, the partner who is most likely to be a carrier is tested first. If test results show that the first partner is not a carrier, then no additional testing is needed. If test results show that the first partner is a carrier, the other partner is tested. Once you have had a carrier screening test for a specific disorder, you do not need to be tested again for that disorder.

A healthy life starts within. Genetic testing is vital in determining the risk of developing certain diseases, screening, and sometimes medical treatment. Different types of genetic testing are done for various reasons. Although genetic testing can provide vital information for diagnosing, treating and preventing illness, there are limitations. For example, if you're healthy, a positive result from genetic testing doesn't always mean you will develop a disease. On the other hand, in some situations, a negative impact doesn't guarantee that you won't have a specific disorder.

Genetic Cancer Testing (CGx) tests a person with a strong family history of certain types of cancer to see if they carry a gene mutation that increases their risk. If they have an inherited mutation, they might want to have screening tests to look for cancer early or even take steps to lower their risk.

As we come to the end of April 2023, we want to recognize it as the official National Cancer Control Month. Cancer has touched nearly every American family and remains the second leading cause of death in the United States. During the rest of National Cancer Control Month and every month after, we can all join the movement to end cancer as we know it. By raising awareness of the risk factors, promoting regular life-saving screenings, investing in research, and expanding access to affordable treatment, we can give patients, survivors, and their families the hope and new beginnings they deserve.

Genetic testing has potential benefits, whether the results are positive or negative for a gene mutation. Test results can provide a sense of relief from uncertainty and help people make informed decisions about managing their health care. For example, a negative impact can eliminate the need for unnecessary checkups and screening tests in some cases. A positive result can direct a person toward available prevention, monitoring, and treatment options.

Suppose you or a loved one has been previously diagnosed with cancer. In that case, genetic testing for cancer can let you know the likelihood of developing that specific type of cancer again and other cancers based on mutations found. In most cases, this genetic test is covered by Medicare and some commercial plans with little to no out-of-pocket costs.

If you or your partner are carrying specific gene mutations and plan to become parents, this testing helps you determine how likely you may be to pass these mutated genes down to your children. A Genetic Carrier Screening delivers insight into the likelihood of your children developing conditions such as cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, sickle cell diseases, and other similar conditions due to acquiring specific genes which are linked to these conditions.
