Louisiana-Mississippi Hospice & Palliative Care Organization Advancing quality hospice and palliative care in Louisiana and Mississippi through education, advocacy and support. Our Purpose:

1.

Together, we are stronger for patients, families and providers. LMHPCO is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization. All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of law. Increase public awareness with regards hospice and other end of life care;

2. Provide educational programs for members and the public concerning hospice and other end of life care;

3. Serve as an information network between and among hospice and other end of life care agencies in Louisiana and Mississippi, and link them to other such agencies and programs throughout the United States;

4. Assist Louisiana and Mississippi hospice and other end of life care agencies and programs in their development and operation;

5. Provide technical and other advice and assistance to governmental agencies engaged in the supervision and regulation of hospice and other end of life care;

6. Build coalitions for improving hospice and other end of life care

Meet Tiwana Oโ€™Rear, Ex Officio President of the LMHPCO Board

As the Chief Operations Officer for Sanctuary Hospice in Tupelo, MS and a proud North Mississippi native, Tiwana has dedicated her career to hospice and palliative care. She leads with both compassion and expertise. Since joining Sanctuary in 2010, she has provided oversight for both administrative and clinical operations, guiding a team deeply committed to patient and family care.

Tiwana earned her Certified Hospice Administrator designation in 2011, and has served on the LMHPCO Board since 2014. She is also a long-time champion for the Alliance for the Advancement of End of Life Care.

Tiwana has continued to grow her leadership through advanced certifications from the University of North Alabama and CAHSAH. For her, hospice is more than a professionโ€”itโ€™s a calling and a reflection of her Southern-rooted belief in caring for the vulnerable with dignity and love.๐Ÿ’™

Meet Dr. Susan Nelson, a dedicated leader in advancing palliative and supportive care across Louisiana and beyond.

Dr. Nelson is Chair, LaPOST Coalition, working to raise awareness about โ€œWhat Matters Mostโ€ conversations (advance care planning) and the LaPOST document for those living with serious illness. She serves as System Chair of Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care, and Bioethics for Ochsner Health, and as Medical Director of Palliative Care for Ochsner Health Network.

Board certified in internal medicine, geriatrics, and hospice & palliative medicine, Dr. Nelson is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) and the American College of Physicians (ACP). She collaborates with the Louisiana Department of Health on dementia and aging projects and is the President of the National POLST Collaborative.

Dr. Nelson has devoted her career to education, patient advocacy, and improving quality of life for patients and families.

Meet Kalisa Mickell - Board Appointed Palliative Care Expert

We are honored to spotlight Kalisa Mickell, NP, ACHPN, palliative care nurse practitioner at North Mississippi Medical Center - Tupelo. With over 20 years of nursing experience, Kalisa has served patients and families across a variety of healthcare settings. At NMMC, she provides compassionate care for those facing chronic and terminal illnesses and completed the Advanced Practice Clinician Fellowship.

Kalisa also serves on the NMMC Ethics Committee and the UAB Medicine Southeast Institute for Innovation in Palliative and Supportive Care Committee. She works with the North Mississippi Health Services Department of Strategy to advance health equity and raise community awareness of conditions impacting minority populations.

๐Ÿ’™ She is passionate about addressing health disparities and ensuring equitable care for all.

Meet Dr. Danielle McMechan, MD โ€“ Board Appointed Palliative Care Expert

Dr. McMechan is the Medical Director at The Hospice of Baton Rouge and Palliative Care Physician at Our Lady of the Lake. She is Board Certified in Family Medicine and brings a deep passion for all aspects of healthcare. She was the first graduate of LSU Health Science Center Baton Rougeโ€™s Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowshipโ€”a milestone that reflects her dedication to advancing end-of-life care. Her excellence has been recognized through honors such as Pediatrics Resident of the Year (2015) and the Rick Schuman Award for Excellence in Family Medicine (2017).

In addition to her leadership in hospice care, Dr. McMechan has seven years of experience in hospital medicine across both community-based and academic centers, giving her a well-rounded perspective on patient care.

Dr. McMechanโ€™s commitment to compassion, excellence, and innovation continues to shape the future of hospice and palliative care in Louisiana. ๐Ÿ’™
