Today, I had my first screening mammogram.

Did you know female orthopedic surgeons are 4x more likely to get breast cancer than the general population? Frequent exposure to radiation, ill-fitting lead (especially around the axilla/armpit), delayed childbearing, and decreased breastfeeding are common in ladypods and all risk factors for breast cancer.

Although more than 50% of medical students are women, only 6% of practicing orthopedic surgeons are women. At orthopedic meetings, there is never a line for the women’s restroom. The started as a way to document the few women at meetings running into each other in the restroom. And while our numbers have grown (and our selfies are getting more crowded), still less than 20% of orthopedic surgery residents are women. We still have a long way to go but the future is bright!!

Sometimes as pedipods we get bonus patients! My sweet patient brought Miss Hooty in to see me today who also needed a little surgery. So we got them both fixed up good as new!

As always didn’t take nearly enough pictures but certainly learned a lot at IPOS 2022. Always great to catch up with old friends, make some new ones, learn some new tricks, and exchange ideas with the best in pediatric orthopedics!
