We are excited to share the future of Children’s Hospital's ThriveKids Program partnership with NOLA Public Schools has been secured with the commitment of $30M in funding from The City Of NOLA over the next 10 years, which will directly contribute to providing health services directly to kids in schools to enhance the mental and physical well-being of students.

In New Orleans, children face unprecedented levels of trauma, with New Orleans youth experiencing four times the national average for rates of PTSD and 54% having experienced the murder of someone close to them. Additionally, less than half of youth who experience trauma receive any form of mental health services. Together, ThriveKids and NOLA Public Schools have been working to change that with our nationally-leading model.

“ThriveKids is working with NOLA Public Schools to proactively help identify needs, and get kids connected to the support and resources they need before they reach a crisis point,” said Children’s Hospital President and CEO Lucio A. Fragoso “This significant commitment to continue this work for the next decade will be nothing short of transformational for child wellbeing here in New Orleans.”

Kudos to our extraordinary team members who participated in the Breakthrough T1D Walk last weekend! The Breakthrough T1D Walk is an event focused on taking action for the entire type 1 diabetes community through raising funds to find a cure, prevent, and better treat T1D. We are of you!

Each November, we honor - one of the most common, chronic incurable diseases of childhood. Most children and adolescents with diabetes require daily treatment with injected insulin for their survival. Research has shown that keeping blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible can help prevent long term complications of diabetes such as eye, kidney and nerve damage as well as cardiovascular disease. However achieving ideal control of diabetes in childhood is challenging and can be frustrating for patients and their families. The mission of the Children’s Hospital Diabetes Center is to help our patients achieve optimal management of diabetes while they participate fully in normal activities of childhood and adolescence. Despite a sudden epilepsy diagnosis when she was 13 years old, Ava has not only become a track star, cheerleader, and honor roll student, but also a pillar of resilience. Thanks to the guidance and expertise of Dr. Daniella Miller of Children's Hospital New Orleans, Ava has thrived as a high school Junior with three seizure-free years on her scoreboard. 💪🌟💜

“In a sport where every millisecond counts, it is critical that Ava’s seizures are fully under control, and that’s something we’ve achieved by working together as a team,” Dr. Miller said. “As her doctor, it has been inspiring to witness Ava’s journey. Epilepsy doesn’t have to stand in the way of dreams, and Ava is living proof of that." Read Ava's story on the blog https://bit.ly/490uFFt

Meet Amberly, an incredible 6-year-old who has shown strength on her journey with Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD), a rare inherited disorder that prevents her body from properly breaking down certain amino acids found in protein. Diagnosed just days after birth, Amberly faced many challenges, including a strict low-protein diet to prevent her from going into acidosis, followed by a liver transplant this past April, which is the only definitive cure for MSUD.

Thanks to the exceptional care she received in the NICU and from the dedicated transplant team at Children’s Hospital New Orleans, Amberly is now thriving—she loves school, enjoys singing and dancing, and has even taken an interest in gymnastics! Her family expresses heartfelt gratitude for the compassionate medical staff who supported her every step of the way.

Amberly’s family reminds us that “no matter how dark it may seem, there is always light.” They emphasize patience and resilience in every child's journey. We’re so proud of Amberly and her warrior spirit!

In the summer of 2023, 15-year-old Robinay Ulmer was getting ready to go back to school with aspirations to land a spot on her school’s volleyball team. The only thing standing between her and tryouts was a physical exam and a thumbs up from her doctor. However, that regular physical exam quickly turned into a shocking revelation: Robinay had a hole in her heart which required surgery to correct.

After surgery and her March 15 discharge, Robinay had to sit on the sidelines of all her activities, but as soon as she got word from Dr. Krulisky, she was back in the game. Robinay has been cleared to play volleyball this season as she returns to school sophomore year. She is also planning on running track, and going out for flag twirling!

Paola Arevalo’s diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma came out of nowhere. One day, 17-year-old Paola was a carefree teenager who loved twirling in her high school band and hanging out with friends. The next day, she found herself as a patient at Children’s Hospital New Orleans. But with her family, doctors, and nurses by her side, she found the strength to take on Hodgkin lymphoma and come back even stronger.

From the moment she heard she had cancer, Paola said she dreamed about ringing the bell at Children’s Hospital – a signal to all that she had beaten cancer. On June 13, 2024, she rang that bell as hard as she could.

“I felt so proud of myself. This is what I had my eye on from the beginning. This is what I wanted for myself and I achieved it,” Paola said. “I kept a positive attitude and ate lots of healthy food. I wanted to get better, and Dr. LeBlanc and Dr. Nieves helped me make that dream a reality.”
