September is National Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Awareness month. This month and every month, we celebrate the tiniest fighters among us – the brave infants and their families in the NICU. Meet one of these tiny fighters today: Estelle! 💚
When Estelle Dunaway was born full-term, her parents expected a smooth delivery. But within hours, she was struggling to breathe and later diagnosed with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN). Airlifted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Manning Family Children’s, Estelle received critical care, including ECMO support to help stabilize her.
But Estelle’s challenges didn’t end there. As her lungs improved, she struggled to feed, a clue that led doctors to diagnose a rare endocrine disorder preventing her body from producing essential hormones needed for feeding, growth, and development. The condition extended her NICU stay to 71 days and required a feeding tube and on-going therapy. Through it all, her parents, Emily and JD, leaned on their faith and the dedicated care team who supported them every step of the way.
“There were so many talented and compassionate caregivers—her doctors, nurses, therapists, even the cleaning staff,” said the Dunaways. “Everyone who came into Estelle’s room was kind and thoughtful. We had to trust the Lord and the care team. Whether it went the way we wanted or not, we had peace knowing that God was in control.”
Today, Estelle is thriving at home—off the feeding tube, full of personality, and getting ready to become a big sister. She continues to receive follow-up care with her endocrinologist Dr. Ricardo Gomez to monitor her hormone levels and support her healthy development.
