Helping families have positive & empowering births. What is a doula? Why should I hire a doula?

A doula is a trained and experienced professional that provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support before, during, and after birth, or in the postpartum period. A doula’s job is to completely support the pregnant woman and to help her to have an empowered and positive pregnancy, birth, and/or early parenting experience. Doula support has been shown to:
- Increase positive birth experiences for the woman (and her partner),
- Reduce the use of medical interventions (such as C-sections)
- Shorten labor time
- Reduce medical costs (fewer procedures, shorter stay)

This week’s advocacy win: ACT No. 762 (SB 300) passed by Senator Royce Duplessis () in 2024 expanded insurance coverage to include lactation services and nutrition consulting.

Postpartum is a critical stage of care, yet many families are left without guidance once they leave the hospital. Lactation support plays a key role in feeding, recovery, and long-term health outcomes.

We celebrated our 15th birthday this month, and we’re still building what access to perinatal and postpartum care can look like in Louisiana.

At Birthmark, we expand access to doula care, lactation services, and community-based support groups for families across the state

This week’s advocacy win: ACT No. 270 (HB 272) passed in 2023 by Representative Matthew Williard (), ensures health plans covering maternity care also include doula services before, during, and after childbirth.

Doula support shouldn’t be out of reach. Expanding access to doulas can help reduce Louisiana’s maternal mortality rate—where Black women account for 62% of pregnancy-related deaths despite 37% of births.
