The Safe Sleep Debate Explained...

When a baby is on its BACK, the air pipe (trachea) is above the food tube (esophagus). Anything that is spit up from the stomach has to go against gravity to be inhaled into the air pipe.

*A healthy baby generally will turn its head so that spit up goes out of its mouth – not back down its throat.

When a baby is on its STOMACH, anything spit up can block the air pipe and cause choking or breathing problems.

* You don't want a baby breathing in spit up, sleeping with face in mattress or arm. All make it difficult for them to breathe.

Have you seen the new recommendations for safe sleep spaces? Remember, baby should always lay flat, on their back, on a firm empty surface with no other items (pillows, blankets, toys, etc.) nearby.

​​Some popular baby products are not necessary and can, in fact, be dangerous for infants. The AAP offers information about sometimes deadly products like baby nests or inclined sleepers and crib bumpers that should stay off the baby registry.

The maternal and infant mortality rates in America are awful. But for Black birthing people, the threat is even higher. We are committed to doing our part to decrease the risk in our communities.

If you would like to help, look into legislation requiring insurance companies to cover doula support and contact your congressperson in support of it. You can also donate to local organizations advocating for change (we have several great ones here in South Louisiana). It is also important that we support movements that push for social justice in America, not just in birthing, but in all areas where injustice can be found.

Are you wondering if it's normal to feel pain when breastfeeding? The answer is: it's complicated. Some discomfort and breast soreness is expected in the first week or two. It is even normal to feel a quick twinge of pain when the baby first latches on. BUT any pain that lasts longer than a few seconds after the baby latches, is not normal. A good latch just feels like a slight tugging sensation on the breast. Consistent pain during a nursing session is an indication there's a problem with the latch. Damage to the ni**le is also an indication of a latch issue. A good latch will not cause cracking and bleeding. Reach out for help if you are experiencing these issues!
