🖐️ Trouble straightening your fingers after an injury? It could be more serious than you think.

Lacerations to the extensor tendons—those that help you open your hand and straighten your fingers—can cause pain, weakness, and long-term loss of motion if left untreated. In this post, orthopedic hand specialist Dr. Brandon Donnelly explains what causes these injuries, how they’re diagnosed, and what treatment and recovery look like.

Carpenter hand pain isn’t just part of the job. Years of gripping power tools can lead to numbness, tingling, and long-term nerve damage.

🚨 This is what a fireworks injury can look like.
These X-rays shows the aftermath of a fireworks accident involving the hand—an all-too-common injury I see in the ER this time of year.

Fireworks are readily available—but that doesn’t make them safe. In fact, over 50% of fireworks injuries treated in emergency rooms involve the hands, thumbs, and fingers. Even sparklers can burn at over 1,000°F, hotter than a blowtorch.

If you’re planning to light fireworks this 4th of July, please use extreme caution. Better yet, start a new tradition: attend a professional display and leave the explosives to the experts.

As a hand specialist, I take no joy in treating these injuries. I’d be thrilled if I never had to see another one again.

🎆 Stay safe. Stay whole.
– Dr. Brandon P. Donnelly, Orthopedic Hand Specialist

“This is the last weekend someone in the USA will have all 10 fingers.” 🧨🖐️
Funny saying — but sadly, it’s true every 4th of July.

Fireworks injuries are no joke. 🚑 Every year, people — especially kids — end up in the ER with burns, lost fingers, or worse.

👀 Parents: Keep a close eye on your children.
🍻 Adults: Put the drinks down if you're lighting fireworks.

Let’s end the holiday weekend with all fingers, limbs, and eyesight intact. 🙌🎆👁️

And btw, happy July 4th! 🎇🍔🗽

🎆 Fireworks & Hand Safety: A Reminder from Dr. Brandon P. Donnelly 🧨

Here in Louisiana, fireworks are sold on nearly every street corner—which can give a false sense of safety. But in a recent study of ER visits, fireworks caused 53% of all hand injuries. Most occurred while lighting the fuse.

If you must use bottle rockets, sparklers, or firecrackers—the top three culprits in fireworks-related hand injuries—please exercise extreme caution and follow the safety recommendations below. Your hands will thank you.
