Go vote yā€™all. If you bought a lottery ticket because you felt like it was worth it to have a shotā€¦.. same logic. Go shoot your shot.

I vote because reproductive rights, healthcare, womenā€™s rights, LGBTQ rights, the safety and wellness of marginalized people, the right to afford to liveā€¦. We matter. You matter.

It was a bummer to see the voter list for my district and how few signatures were on there. Grab your neighbor, drag your partnerā€¦. Go cast your vote.

What if I donā€™t want to do what is recommended by a health care provider and they say Iā€™ll need to sign AMA forms?
You have the right to informed refusal. Sometimes, particularly in labor and delivery, if a patient chooses an option that is different than that recommended by a health care provider the staff may ask you to sign AMA forms. AMA means ā€œagainst medical advice.ā€ This means that you are acknowledging the choice youā€™re making is not what your medical provider recommends. This does not mean that your insurance company will refuse payments or that youā€™re not entitled to compassionate, quality health care at that time or any future time. AMA forms should not be scary if youā€™ve truly received informed care and are comfortable with your decision. Financial threats and threats of refused or abusive care, implied or otherwise, are manipulative.

The truth is, your healthcare team likely doesnā€™t know any details about your insurance policy, or even your bill for that matter.

Doula Pointers šŸ§” ā¬‡ļø

The CDC reports the reason for our nationā€™s high cesarean rates, high intervention rates, etc is infant centric care. This means that care is focused on the infant, at an expense to the pregnant person.

As doulas we see this in live time on a regular, and i dare say, reliably constant basis. It is usually used to create emotional manipulation to gain consent. It looks something like this :

Care provider: we think itā€™s best to do x

Patient: I am concerned about that. Can we not/delay/consider another option? Can you provide details and all information necessary for informed consent/refusal?

CP: you know I wouldnā€™t suggest anything I wouldnā€™t suggest for my own daughter/mother/friend (avoidant, manipulative)

Patient: oh. Ok. But is this important?

CP: we all just want a healthy baby!

This scenario plays out in prenatal visits - vaginal exams, ultrasounds, tests, scheduled inductions; and in labor rooms - vaginal exams, monitoring, medications, positions, augmentations, cesareans, perineal massage, positioningā€¦.

Informed consent cannot be gained by manipulation.

The real response to ā€œwe all just want a healthy baby?ā€ :

ā€œNo, thatā€™s not what i want. I want both of us to be healthy and fully well, your care standards are too low.ā€

We are trained to be non confrontational, accept the power differential, and to not be active participants in our healthcare. Refuse the role. šŸ§”

Did you save the umbilical cord?
Many parents save the little bit that falls off as the cord heals and dries. If we encapsulate your placenta we can save the cord for you and youā€™ll have a sweet keepsake, complimentary.
šŸ§”
In this cord you can see there are three vessels - one vein and two arteries. These vessels moved all the oxygen, nutrition, and waste between your baby and their placenta. The space around the vessels is Whartonā€™s Jelly, this is what kept these vessels safe while your baby grew.

We think theyā€™re beautiful!

Do you know your rights? šŸ¤”šŸ’¬
You have the right to informed consent AND refusal. What does that mean?

This means you have the right to know, without coercion, what the benefits, risks, alternatives of any suggested healthcare measures are, including what happens if you choose to do nothing, AND what the alternative options are.

But thatā€™s not it!! AFTER you have a good understanding of that you have the legal right to either to consent to the suggested step or to refuse it WITHOUT consequence of your decision negatively impacting the kindness, respect, and quality of healthcare you experience.

What does this mean? You and your health care provider can agree to disagree, respectfully.

Wanna hear a sweet story? šŸ¤—
This wee one has a mama who really wanted to breastfeed and faced a bit of a setback with the introduction of bottles in the hospital. She hadnā€™t been able to latch at breast in a bit and her mama was producing all the milk she needed, and a lot extra. Breastfeeding is always a dyad issue. In this case we have a healthy baby thanks to her loving parents and plenty of milk.
šŸ‘¶šŸ¼ - āœ”ļø
šŸ„›- āœ”ļø

Now just to get them together! šŸ¤±šŸ¼

In a sweet home visit šŸ” we were able to do just that and confirm with a feeding weight that this little one successfully moved her whole feeding at breast!

šŸ‘¶šŸ¼ + šŸ„› + šŸ” = šŸ’•šŸ¤±šŸ¼šŸ’•

And best of all, no more triple feeding!

Sweetest story ever huh? Those little baby toes sure are just the best!

In all points of your healthcare, including pregnancy and birth, you have the legal right to informed consent and refusal.

This means you are provided opportunity to understanding all of your options, including their benefits and risks without provider bias or manipulation, and then make a decision to either consent to the proposed plan of care or refuse.

Opheliaā€™s birth story, as told by Ophelia: ā€œI was swimming around like a fish and then the water breaked. Out, out out the water goes. I said ā€˜What happened water? I really do want to keep swimming.ā€™ Then I had to get out. I was so sad. I keep crying like that. Iā€™m so upset.ā€

Thank you for your beautiful wisdom baby girl, and thank you to for sharing. Itā€™s a sweet gift to watch these tiny humans grow. šŸ§”

Letā€™s learn a little about home lactation visits. Part one, the whole fam is welcome!

Today I am so proud of this beautiful family. They have overcome so much in their first 4 weeks together and this morning completed a full feeding at breast. This milk is hard earned and this dyad really needed this sweet win. Baby Cece settled in and enjoyed cuddling with her mama, then moved all the milk she needed. Daddy has been working hard to care for everyone and has been a champ. Heā€™s not pictured here, but deserves a shout out for sure!

Also pictured, the family nanny. He loves his new baby and just wants to check in.

Our Story

We believe every family deserves and benefits from having a birth and postpartum doula. Birth is normal life event and we honor every birthing personā€™s right to birth as they wish and is best for them. Postpartum is a time when families need support and care that is personal and tailored to them. You will remember your birth for the rest of your life. We want you to have a happy birth day and a happy postpartum. Nola Nesting, the first group of birth workers (doulas, childbirth educators, placenta encapsulators) working together in the New Orleans area, began in an effort to make birthing resources like doulas and childbirth classes more accessible and easier to find. By supporting one another we are able to support more families and have a greater impact on the culture of birth in our area. We have continued to grow over the years, but are a small business specializing in personal client care. Nola Nesting has been voted Best Doulas, Best Birth Class, and Best Support Group (in two categories) by Nola Family Magazine in 2017 and 2018.
