Having trouble sleeping, but you cut out coffee after noon or maybe entirely? Did you know that coffee only has one stimulant, caffeine, but tea has FOUR? Sure it has less caffeine than coffee, but the other three more than make up for it. Two of them are related to caffeine, theophylline and theobromine, all three are also found in cocoa. The final stimulant, L-theanine, is the likely culprit because it affects dopamine, and increases alpha wave production, which is not conducive to a good night's sleep. Earlier in the day, it can be a great boost because it increases attention, boosts your memory, and helps you to focus on your work, but at night it can keep your mind in overdrive. After a few sleepless nights myself, I went looking for answers as to why tea wound me up so much more than coffee did, as you can see, there are plenty of reasons. Now, I only drink herbal tea after 2pm. Do you think that would help you sleep better too?
