Like the ancestor that they are named for, may they carry on through your memory to reconnect you with deeper truths. Handcrafted in small batches with all natural ingredients, Elspeth’s Airs scents are more intimate and subtle than commercial fragrances.

The scent of a story that begins on a Greek island…

This year, I collaborated with artist, Anastasia Pelias , for her upcoming exhibition, “So is Life (Etsi Einai i Zoi)”, which opens on Thursday, 11/20, in Biloxi, MS.

The exhibition is a “multi-sensory installation that reflects on (her) mother’s life and the larger forces that shaped it- patriarchy, migration, and the passage of time.” She commissioned me to create an essential oil blend to be diffused in the space that captures the scent & feeling of Skopelos, the island where her mother was born, in the western Aegean Sea. I got to work with the fragrant essences of pine, wild herbs, and flowers native to the island (actually sourced from Greece!) The project and working with Anastasia were such pleasures, and felt so aligned with how I like to work with scent.

More from Anastasia: “This work transforms inherited memory and loss into a space that invites reflection and presence. The installation weaves together song, sound, scent, video, painting, and sculpture to evoke both my mother’s story and my own deep connection to the land she was forced to leave behind.”

Definitely worth the road trip to Biloxi if you’re in New Orleans. I hear great things about the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum, as well. I’ll be attending the opening on 11/20. Hit me up if you plan to come!

Long time, no post. It’s that time of year again. Tomorrow marks 20 years since the levee failure and man-made disaster following Hurricane Katrina. I’ve been feeling pretty blah about it and haven’t really wanted to go there emotionally, but it’s inevitable and my body feels it more & more the closer it gets. However, I am excited to share that I’ll be doing an essential oil demonstration at the Red Tent event from 12-1 through at Armstrong Park. It feels poignant and full circle to be sharing about the ways aromatherapy can support us through the hard emotions that may come up at this time of year. We’ll be giving out a limited number of aromatherapy inhalers and rose water. Stop by if you feel called and I hope everyone for whom this is a difficult day feels held and supported.

Welcome, Spring!

May what you’ve been growing beneath the surface begin to emerge. May we feel renewed in our efforts and fortified by the tenacity of nature.

I’ve been in deep hibernation mode and while it’s been insightful and nourishing, I welcome the quickening pulse of Spring.

The plants of early Spring are some of my favorites. In New Orleans, the last of the Sweet Olive scents the air as citrus blossoms begin to open.

Cleansing herbs like Cleavers and Chickweed have been paving the way, flower buds are opening, Oak & Cypress leaves are growing back. Azaleas herald the season shift in shades of bright fuchsia, light pink, and white.

What plants and smells signal Spring to you?

First Spring Market! Sunday from 12-5!

OK, so it’s not technically spring yet, but it sure does feel like it in New Orleans. Stop by the Piety Market in the church at Hotel Peter & Paul at 2317 Burgundy Street. There will be food, music, and lots of great locally made art and goods. Come by before you head to Barkus!

Snow day glory

I had such a joyful couple of days playing in the snow, going on adventures, and watching my community light up with wonder. I did all the snow day things- built snowmen, went sledding (in a canoe!), laid in the cold softness and looked up at the trees, drank hot chocolate. I even remembered to take a picture of a perfume in the snow on the final day! (“Nuance” felt appropriate.)

Yes, the problems of the world are still here, but my spirit, inner child & nervous system really needed that little break! I’m so grateful I was able to fully embrace this time.

Handcrafted in small batches with high quality, natural ingredients, Elspeth’s Airs are intimate and subtle, blending with the wearer’s skin and unfolding over time. Each scent is a balance of top, heart and base notes and last for at least several hours and often longer. Spritz on your pulse points, in hair, on clothing for your enjoyment and that of those you allow in your personal space.

Elspeth’s Airs considers the source and sustainability of the botanical materials it uses, and constantly strives to stay current and do better.

While the aroma and energetics of the plants used form the basis of each perfume, their aromatherapeutic properties are also considered. Justine is currently completing an aromatherapy certification and will soon offer various products with specific therapeutic benefits.
