Screening and early detection are key to fighting cancer. About 90% of patients who go on to be diagnosed with endometrial cancer have postmenopausal bleeding—but transva**nal ultrasonography, the method used to examine postmenopausal bleeding, doesn’t always catch cancer at first examination.

To help improve ob-gyns’ ability to detect and diagnose endometrial cancer, ACOG now recommends that endometrial tissue sampling be used alongside transva**nal ultrasonography at first examination to give clinicians a more reliable path to detecting and treating uterine cancers.

This dual approach reduces the risk of a missed diagnosis while also streamlining the process for patients, who can have sampling done in the same visit as their ultrasound. If you’ve experienced postmenopausal bleeding, speak with your ob-gyn to learn more.

Oral and head and neck cancers have several preventable risk factors. To***co use and heavy alcohol consumption remain major contributors, especially here in the Gulf South. HPV is also a significant and growing cause of throat cancers, particularly those involving the tonsils and base of the tongue.

The good news? You can reduce your risk by:
• Avoiding to***co
• Limiting alcohol
• Getting the HPV vaccine
• Keeping up with dental checkups and screenings

National Minority Health Month is a reminder that improving cancer outcomes requires addressing gaps in access to care and research participation.

Black Americans continue to face higher cancer burden, yet remain underrepresented in clinical trials making up more than 13% of the U.S. population but less than 5% of participants in many cancer studies.

At the LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center, we are working to expand access through community-based partnerships, education, and innovative models like the Gulf South Clinical Trials Network, bringing research opportunities closer to the patients we serve.

Advancing cancer care means ensuring discoveries benefit everyone.
