We have had a lot of patients recently who have mentioned trying Botox to relieve TMJ discomfort, but they have had significant arthritic changes to their TMJ.
WHY?
As trained medical professionals, we have to alert patients to risks, benefits, and alternatives of all treatment.
Unfortunately, while Botox can help with symptoms of clenching and grinding, it does NOT treat underlying temporomandibular joint pathology. It acts as a "Band-aid" therapy. While symptom alleviation can have its uses, it is NOT definitive treatment.
Treatments like Botox can allow joint pathology to progress unchecked, even though the patient doesn't "hurt," which can lead to pathologic changes to the joint.
In our office, we treat the source of clenching and grinding, finding the underlying pathology and healing it.
Definitive treatment helps HEAL the orthopedic problems, which can help with clenching and grinding.
If you've been struggling or relying on repeated Botox to get relief, there are alternatives that will help your underlying joint problem! We'd be happy to help! 504-832-2222
