To learn more about HIV prevention and accessing PrEP in New Orleans, contact your local St. Thomas Community Health Center at (504) 529-5558. What’s PrEP? PrEP is an option to prevent HIV for people who have tested negative, but are at risk of contracting the virus. PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis and comes as a pill which must be taken every day or an injection every other month. Prophylaxis means "prevention" in medical terminology. Here’s how it works: PrEP prevents the virus from replicating itself and spreading throughout the body. The medication has shown to reduce the risk of HIV infection by up to 99% and is generally well tolerated with few side-effects. Did you know that 1 in 8 Americans with HIV are unaware they are infected? In Louisiana, it's 1 in 5. PrEP allows those who are at high risk of contracting HIV to take control of their sexual health. Regardless of your sexual partner’s HIV-status or lifestyle, PrEP can give you ease of mind. The mission of We PrEP Together is to reduce the stigma of HIV-related health services by providing confidential and affordable medical care to those at risk. We want to eliminate barriers for this care for everyone who can benefit from this program. At St. Thomas Community Health Center, your visit is fully confidential -- after all, there are many other services we offer other than PrEP. To us, your socio-economic status shouldn’t determine your chances of staying HIV-negative. If you’re interested in getting PrEP, your first step is to contact a St. Thomas Community Health Center provider at 504-529-5558 and schedule an appointment. Same-day and next-day appointments available so you can get on PrEP now! We will keep your personal information 100% confidential, so you can get the services you need.

February 28th is National HIV is Not a Crime Awareness Day,
a day dedicated to raising awareness about the flaws in legislation that criminalize HIV and harm public health. These laws disproportionately affect priority communities, highlighting the urgent need for this day of recognition.

HIV criminalization often escalates minor offenses to felonies, disproportionately punishing people living with HIV. These policies frequently fail to consider intent or actual transmission risk and rely heavily on third-party intervention for prosecution, showing little empathy for those living with HIV.

This is why PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is so crucial. While modern medicine allows people living with HIV to achieve an undetectable viral load—meaning they cannot transmit the virus—they still face stigma and discrimination under outdated laws.

If you are HIV-negative, consider taking preventative measures such as PrEP, using barrier methods like condoms, and getting tested regularly. Together, we can combat stigma, promote education, and advocate for fair and just policies.
