Melissa Dufrene, Psy.D, Board Certified Clinical Psychologist

Melissa Dufrene, Psy.D, Board Certified Clinical Psychologist Dr. Dufrene is a Board Certified (ABPP) Clinical Psychologist at Algiers Neurobehavioral Resource. The exact treatment goals are individually tailored.

She assesses and effectively treats depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, ADHD, & learning disabilities. Dr. Dufrene provides psychological assessment and treatment for children, adolescents, and adults. People often come to a psychologist for help with a variety of problems, such as: trouble with school or work, excessive fear or worry, and depression. Often, a psychological assessment is recommended to help determine a person’s specific problems (such as a learning disorder or ADHD), and/or to further understand their emotional problems. Once the nature of the problems is determined, treatment can begin. Dr. Dufrene provides cognitive behavioral therapy, which examines how a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interacting and working against their life goals and feelings of happiness. Dr. Dufrene has trained at one of the top treatment centers for obsessive compulsive disorder and other anxiety disorders. She also has experience successfully treating posttraumatic stress disorder. The treatment method for these disorders is very effective and can be explained in more detail by phone or in person. There are also several effective choices for individuals and families learning to live with ADHD. Cognitive behavioral therapy can also be used to help people experience relief from chronic pain.

Great article about the damage of negative thinking. For parents of younger kids, I recommend the book, Don't Feed The ANTS by Erin Bernardi

All kids blow things out of proportion or jump to conclusions at times, but consistently distorting reality is not innocuous.

Today, and most days, I am struck by the strength my clients show against the battles they are fighting. Often we are unaware that even those closest to us are feeling weak, broken, or hurt. Be brave enough to ask, courageous enough to tell, and loving enough to encourage.

Don't be surprised if this weather has you down. If you've noticed your mood has dropped make an additional effort to introduce some pleasurable activities. Here are some suggestions: try a new workout class, finally crack that book you've been interested in, meet up with a friend, listen to some new music, or watch a funny movie. Hang in there! The sun will come back out eventually!

This reminds me of a recent conversation with a client who is learning to cope with their anxiety. The client called me, worried about things at work, and stated they were considering quitting their job. This is a job that they previously loved, and worked very hard to get. I encouraged them not to make such a huge decision while anxiety was doing the driving. I asked them to consider what they would do if it was their body that felt so terrible rather than their mind. They said they would take a sick day. So I told them that was what they should do. How was this any different? They took two days of sick leave (which they had tons of built up since they hardly ever take a day), and found new perspective. I hope we can continue to take positive steps towards treating mental health and physical health the same.

This morning I completed a 20 minute session of progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) with an elementary student who has ADHD. The student did great, and was able to identify how and where their body gets tense when they are angry. Now we are both able to start the day with relaxed mind and body. If you are interested in PMR there are many options available on You Tube, Spotify, and iTunes. It is a great tool for reducing distraction, and physical symptoms.
