We often talk with our children about situations with friends or with classmates--say, somebody's been rude to them or is teasing them about something. Your child may ask, "Why did that kid say this? Why are they treating me this way?" You may say, "you know, whatever your heart's full of spills out of your mouth, and so what might that kid's heart have been full of that day?" This helps cultivate empathy in our children: we don't excuse what somebody said or did, but let's try to understand where the other child is coming from and what their heart may be full of... or missing.
