For the last of this week's "Peek" into the Biostatistics program here at LSU School of Public Health we wanted to show off a bit the research being done! Dr. Anand Paul is leading exciting work in data science with his recent research into new methods to improve how we detect patterns and make predictions. His advancements, including the Enhanced Bayesian Gaussian Hidden Markov Mixture Clustering Model and a hybrid Bi-LSTM and RBM model for underwater object detection, demonstrate significant improvements in clustering performance, computational efficiency, and accuracy.

As part of our Peek into the Program series, we’d be remiss if we didn't highlight the Biostatistics & Data Science's commitment to social responsibility and community engagement. This past March, our faculty and students presented research and volunteered at the ENAR 2025 conference in New Orleans—demonstrating our dedication to collaboration and meaningful contributions to the scientific community.

Today, our Peek into the Program includes some of our newest Biostatistics & Data Science faculty members, Siyi Chen and Anand Paul!

Dr. Chen, who joined us last summer, collaboration is the name of the game. "My previous training involved developing statistical methods for Alzheimer's, while my current research uses IV regression like Mendelian Randomization for causal inference, and I enjoy collaborating with clinicians and researchers."

As for Dr. Paul, it is all about the newest technology. He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from National Cheng Kung University in 2010 and focuses on Big Data Analytics, AI, and Machine Learning, with extensive research on Smart Cities. Recognized among the top 2% of scientists worldwide by Stanford University and Elsevier, he has been an IEEE Senior Member since 2015 and serves as an editor for several prestigious SCIE journals.

Exciting Announcement! Louisiana Cancer Prevention & Control Programs and Taking Aim at Cancer in Louisiana have joined forces for a vital cause. Introducing "It’s Not Too Early to Know," a campaign dedicated to raising awareness about colorectal cancer among young Black men (30-44 years old) in Louisiana.

Launched in June, this initiative focuses on educating men on the significance of knowing their family medical history related to colorectal cancer. By starting conversations early, we aim to make CRC screening more familiar and less intimidating.

Learn more and get involved at NotTooEarly.org. Together, let’s empower our community with knowledge and proactive health practices.

It’s hotter than a crawfish boil out there. Here’s how to survive without melting:

– Eat fresh food so your oven doesn’t turn your house into a sauna
– Drink water like it’s your job
– Make friends with your A/C and every fan you own
– If the sun’s at its worst, you shouldn’t be. REST!
– Keep those blinds down like you're hiding from the heat. Because you are.
– Sunscreen: because turning into a lobster is not a good look

And, no joke, know your local resources—cooling centers and community services can be lifesavers!
