For our last ever (for 2025 at least) Peek Into The Program, we'd like to introduce you to some amazing work being done by the Environmental Health, Climate and Sustainability program!

First up, Dr. Rahman led a groundbreaking national study, “Dental Clinic Deserts in the U.S.”, that maps access to dental care across the country for the first time. His research examines where dental clinics are located, how many providers are available, how far people must travel, and how population size affects access. The study’s insights shed light on critical gaps in oral healthcare—helping inform policies to reduce dental shortage areas and improve access for underserved communities nationwide.

And let's not forget the work being done by the program director, Dr. Keim! He served as the lead author on a paper published in the Journal of Climate that determined that hurricane seasons have been getting longer over the past 50+ years. "In other words," he told us, "the earlier storms are coming earlier and the later storms are arriving later."

With today's Peek, we wanted to give a special shout-out to some truly inspirational work being done! Dr. Katner’s dedication to environmental justice has earned her multiple honors, including the Katrina Hero Award, Community Angel Award, and Community Hero Award. Her work with Louisiana communities tackles heavy metal water contamination and pollution from highways and industry.

Her research in Treme—highlighting the health impacts of Interstate-10—gained national recognition and was cited as a model for President Biden’s National Infrastructure Project. Today, she’s leading an EPA-funded effort to improve air quality monitoring around the Claiborne Expressway.

For today's Peek, let us introduce you to Dr. Godebo, an Associate Professor in Environmental Health, Climate, and Sustainability at the LSU School of Public Health and the LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center. His research explores how environmental contaminants—like metals and fluoride—affect human health through water, food, soil, and air.

He’s led projects around the world, from studying fluoride exposure in Ethiopia to investigating air pollution and chronic disease in Louisiana. Dr. Godebo even uses bees and honey as bioindicators of environmental pollution—connecting global science with local health impacts.

This week marks a new month and a new Peek Into The Program week, this time looking at our Environmental Health, Climate & Sustainability (EHCS) program!

First up, let us introduce you to William Wisen! He joined the EHCS Program in our joint MD-MPH program, and he has developed a keen interest in understanding the health impact of environmental hazards on human health, especially in the context of public health emergencies. While working on this MPH degree, he is also pursuing an MD.

This Halloween season, remember to stay boo-sted and keep both ghouls and germs at bay. Whether you’re out trick-or-treating or enjoying some frightful festivities, don’t let preventable illness come back to haunt you.

Wash your hands often, keep your cauldron of healthy habits bubbling, and don’t ghost your flu shot or booster appointment. Good public health isn’t magic—it’s the result of everyday choices that help protect our entire community.

From all of us at the LSU School of Public Health, wishing you a safe, healthy, and fang-tastic Halloween!
