The highlights included: meeting the Easter bunny, dying eggs with cool whip, and doing a bubbling egg experiment!

OT Word of the Week: ENGAGEMENT

Engagement- to participate or become involved in their environment before the baby/child can generate language. For example: A child can use gestures, smiles, and coos to engage with people and their environment
Engagement is so important because it is the foundation of all learning and interaction!
Recognize and encourage these early communication skills in your child and keep the conversation and learning going!

What a treat to end this Bugs and Garden Week with the most beautiful spring weather!
We had so much fun learning and playing with (not so creepy) crawlers and things in the garden!

One of the fun things we did was make coffee ground dough to simulate dirt! Here is the recipe so you can try it at home too:

2 c flour
1 c salt
1/2 c dark coffee grounds
1 1/2 tbsp cream of tartar
2 c water
1 tbsp oil

Add all ingredients to a large saucepan. Heat over a medium heat, stirring continuously until a ball of dough forms (2-3 min). Remove dough and place it on a work space to knead for 1-2 min.
Now you are ready to play! Add your favorite garden toys for extra fun!

Each week, we are going to highlight a term often used in one of our disciplines (ABA, OT, Speech, and PT). We hope to bring a better understanding of a topic we often work on and open up the conversation for tips/tricks or answer questions!

This week, our ABA word of the week is GENERALIZATION.

Generalization is when an acquired skill, learned in a specific situation can be carried over to different settings, people, and contexts

For example, if a child learns to take turns while playing Candyland with one specific friend at school. Generalization would occur if this child took turns while playing hopscotch with a sibling at the park.

Generalization is often quite difficult and occurs over time. Starting with the child’s strengths and in a familiar situation occurs first, and then you can work in new people and environment.

Winter FUN in Speech Group

We read “On the First Day of Winter” sung to the tune of the Twelve Days of Christmas song. We also decorated the same snowman from the story!
We worked on counting and following 1 and 2 step directions while having so much fun!
