I've been seeing a lot of posts about this magical liquid ✨️COLOSTRUM✨️.

Let's clear some things up, first.

Colostrum IS breast/chest milk.
Colostrum is the first milk your body makes, until about 3 days after birth.
Colostrum is a concentrated protein, carb, and form of hydration.
Colostrum contains enough vitamin K to protect your baby in their first weeks of life.
Colostrum comes in small amounts to accommodate your newborn's tiny tummy and fresh immune system.
Colostrum is critical to the longevity of your lactation journey.

Many parents who see the amount of milk they make in the first 3 days postpartum believe it is not enough to sustain their baby.

KEEP GOING! Your body needs those 2-3 days of consistent feedings/pumping to produce more milk.

Once your body receives a clear message that there is a baby to feed, your mature milk will come in. It will be whiter, thinner, and in larger volumes.

How do you send that clear message? Feeding on demand. Put your baby to breast/chest as often as they desire. Your body makes milk based on your baby's hunger demands.

Colostrum is not the same as mature milk. If you pump, you will see that you only get a small amount each session. Do NOT let this deter you. This is how it is intentionally biologically designed.

Did you know your newborn's stomach is only the size of a small cherry or marble? To fill their stomach, it only takes 1-2 TEASPOONS. Not ounces.

So, that little bit you of milk you see? It is enough.

You are enough.

Follow for birth, postpartum, pregnancy loss, and breast/chest feeding support.

Many blessings and mindful moments,

There is NO evidence to support a rule of "ice chips only" or fasting during labor.

None.

In fact, it can have harmful effects.

Labor can burn thousands of calories, and yet laboring people are made to fast, receiving only sips of water, ice chips, and IV fluids.

This can cause drastic changes in blood sugar, even sending the body into ketosis.

In pregnancy, ketosis is associated with baby experiencing bradycardia (slowed heart rate), hypoxia, and distress. It is correlated with an increase in peri and antenatal death.

But parents are encouraged to starve themselves during labor.

It makes no sense.

Hospital policy is not law.
Learn the facts so you and your support team can advocate for the care you and your baby deserve.

Rituals are similar to habits or routines; all offer the comfort of consistency, stability, and balance. Rituals hold a sacred and symbolic importance, providing space for self-awareness and reflection, leading to a deepened connection to self.

In pregnancy, creating rituals encourages connection to your body, your mind, and your growing babe. This can look like dedicating a part of every evening to rubbing your belly with oil and talking with your baby.

In grief, rituals provide a structured and intentional space for processing, grounding, releasing, and accepting emotions. In community, grief rituals offer comfort and compassion. I have seen this in many forms amongst loss parents. An example is the Wave of Light, when everyone lights a candle at 7PM in their own time zone, creating a wave of support and acknowledgment.

In postpartum, establishing rituals that aid in healing the birthing parent, family bonding, and providing support can ease this transitional phase of life. In Ayurveda, this phase is largely focused on nurturing and supporting the birthing parent by incorporating morning and evening rituals based on individual needs.

Rituals are intentional, symbolic actions that help you navigate pregnancy, grief, and postpartum with mindfulness, support, and connection. These provide a framework for how you live your life and nurture wellness within the self and the family.

Unconventional ways to support Postpartum Parents

Items for the baby are nice, but our society has really taken any focus off the parents.

"Give me that baby!"
"Look at the baby!"
"We got this for the baby!"
"We were thinking of the baby!"
"What can we get for the baby?"

But, birth is about more than bringing a new life earthside. Parents are born too, and siblings!

There is very little emphasis on nurturing, caring for, and loving on the new parents and older siblings. Yet, the entire family dynamic shifts whenever a life is added or lost.

Here are some ideas of how you, a supportive person in their lives, can tend to the whole family unit.

START HERE --> Message or call ahead of going over, always. Ask what their boundaries are surrounding visitation, physical, emotional, and social needs, etc. Then, offer to HELP, not just see and hold the baby.

Wondering what a doula is or how one can help you? Here are the four pillars of doula care 💗

🫶Physical support: help the birthing person maintain a sense of comfort, confidence, and control throughout their pregnancy, labor, and birthing experience.

This looks like:
Providing various pain management tools and information about options.
Providing guidance into different positions, massage, and counter pressure as requested.
Helping to create and maintain a calm, sacred birthing environment
Ensuring birthing person remains nourished and hydrated

🩵 Emotional support: help birthing person feel cared for, seen, heard, and respected.

This looks like:
Accepting your wants and needs as a birthing person
Providing a continuous, supportive, loving presence
Providing encouragement, empowerment, and acknowledgment
Appropriately reframing negative self-talk, doubts, and fears.
Validating your experience

📑Informational support: help the birthing person and their birth partner become informed on what to expect, rights they have, and options available for labor and birth

This looks like:
Providing relevant, evidence based information
Suggesting agreed upon techniques and tools during labor and birth
Helping explain medical procedures before/as they occur in understandable terms
Helping your birth partner understand what’s going on during labor

📢 Self-empowerment support: accept and advocate for the birthing person in their right to make decisions about their own body and own baby.

This looks like:
Encouraging you to ask questions and verbalize preferences
Asking what you want and need
Supporting all of your decisions
Amplifying YOUR voice
Creating space and time for you to ask questions, review evidence-based info, and make decisions without feeling pressured or rushed
Facilitating communication between you and your care team
Teaching you and your birth partner positive communication techniques

What does it mean to be "trauma-informed" in birth work?

Did you know that research shows doula support improves birth outcomes?

This looks like:
31% decrease in Pitocin use
12% increase in spontaneous vaginal births
9% decrease in medicinal pain relief
14% decrease in newborns admittance to NICU
34% decrease in risk of dissatisfaction with birth experience

My first two birthing experiences were traumatic. I worked through these feelings of guilt, shame, fear, anger. I had practiced yoga and meditation to get back in tune with my body. I sought and participated in counselling and community. And although labor was calm and natural for my third birth, I experienced a trauma response instead of consciously and intentionally bringing my baby earthside.

To be a trauma-informed birth worker means to understand the profound impact various traumas have beyond the conscious mind. It also requires recognizing potentials that past traumas (such as sexual assault, previous difficult births, or childhood experiences), can resurface during the childbirth process.

The first way I support you as a trauma-informed birth doula is to build a trusting relationship with you before, during, and after labor. This trust is co-created between you and me, allowing you to feel more secure and supported during this sacred time.

In our initial meetings, I can suggest coping strategies to help you manage anxiety, fear, or pain. Tools I recommend: relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, mindfulness practices, release rituals, and how to hear the message these feelings are sending without allowing them to consume you. Together, we can discuss potential triggers in order for your birth experience to be as protected, safe, and sacred as you wish it to be. I will ensure you feel empowered to use your voice, you know your rights and options, you are allowed give your consent prior to any procedures or interventions, and your autonomy and choice are respected.

During the birthing process, I will protect the safe and sacred container we have intentionally created. I will respect your choices and autonomy, only providing the support you desire when you want it.

Many blessing and mindful moments,
KMBC
