Spring is Kapha season, which is a combination of water and earth elements. Kapha’s seat is in the lungs. early spring spring is the time to shed the stagnancy of winter in the winter. We tend to eat fattier and heavier foods and tend to be less active. This helps us to stay warm during the cold months. During this time, Kapha is in a solid state. Just like the winter snow melts as the weather gets warm, so does Kapha in our bodies. This can lead to excess liquefied Kapha in the spring. This may show up as mucus or congestion. This is why spring colds, viruses and allergies are common. Spring is the time to release any toxins that have built up during the winter. We can help this fall along by eating later foods and doing a spring cleanse. Eat what foods are naturally growing, like bitter spring greens to cleanse your liver. Add pungent spices to your foods, such as ginger, cumin, galangal, onions, garlic, turmeric, and black pepper. Avoid cold, frozen, leftover and processed food. Prefer light grains, such as quinoa, and millet. Avoid heavy foods such as wheat and dairy.

Spring is Kapha season. Kapha is earth and water. I joke that earth and water make mud. Kapha has all the qualities of mud: heavy, dense, sticky, slimy and cold. Signs of excess Kapha in your body are: Spring allergies, cold, congestion (lungs, heart, edema, anywhere…), lethargy, brain fog, sadness, depression, attachment and/or weight gain.
