Tuscarawas County has some great solutions for addiction recovery...but why is supportive recovery housing an ESSENTIAL part of the solution?
To understand this question, its important to understand someone's recovery journey and how that might look in our community....
Currently, our county has several great options for detox and residential treatment such as OhioGuidestone's Riverhaven for women and Stillwater Crossing for Men. Out of the county, we have seen the great work that Cedar Ridge Behavioral Health does for men and women.
Treatment is an environment where someone would go to to get a medical detox from the substances their body is dependent on (sometimes a life-threatening process if not handled correctly). Residential treatment would also offer counseling, therapy and medications if needed. This stay would typically last for around 30-90 days. Luckily most facilities in our area can provide these services using someone's Medicaid or insurance and there is no out of pocket costs (otherwise this could run into the thousands of dollars per day....yes per day!)
After 90 days, the person may be clean and sober and feeling good, but where will they go from here? Back to the possibly unhealthy environment they were living in prior to treatment? During treatment, there has not been time or space to work, find housing, and secure something sustainable.
From there, the numbers speak for themselves: over 80% of people relapse in the first 6-12 months after treatment! This means that if 200 people in our county went to rehab today without having a good step afterwards, only 40 might still be clean this time next year!
Thats where sober living/recovery housing comes in. Organizations like Beneath the Shade provide a home-like environment for people to live, work, and build their lives for those vulnerable 6-12 months after treatment. This might result in a relapse rate of 20-30%. Huge difference!
While in recovery housing, people can learn how to build a support group (essential for preventing relapse) and discover what tools or resources they might need for long-term recovery.
Including Beneath the Shade, our county currently has 3 recovery houses which in total can serve about 12 people. One for men and 2 for women. This is a great start, but most definitely ONLY the beginning.
Beneath the Shade is laser-focused on providing the most impactful and sustainable solutions for the community we serve. We are confident that we have figured out most of the hurdles that have derailed many other programs. And we are confident we will figure out the rest and be able to share it with our region.
