Recognizing the warning signs could save a life. ⚠️

When something feels off, trust that instinct. Changes in mood, withdrawal, or talking about feeling like a burden aren’t just “phases.”

You don’t need all the answers. Just check in, start the conversation, and help them find support.

It’s better to reach out than stay silent.

This spring, members of our research team are driving across the Commonwealth to visit all 14 of PA’s 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline call centers! As part of our federal 988 Implementation Grant, and in partnership with the state Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, our team works with call centers on collecting crucial data metrics, obtaining sustainable funding, and providing any additional supports needed. While each call center operates in unique ways, they are all doing incredible, life-saving work!

In fact, a recently published article (linked in our bio) found that since the rollout of 988 in 2022, the rates of su***de amongst young people in the US has dropped 11% below projections! These data are both encouraging and useful in our continuing efforts toward sustainable funding and more robust and comprehensive crisis care and services.

This past weekend Clinical Director Dr. Zullo conducted a training for members Swarthmore College's baseball team. In this 3-hour gatekeeper training, student athletes had the opportunity to learn about warning signs of su***de, how to support upstream su***de prevention efforts, and the steps to navigate a crisis when a friend might be at risk for su***de. Together with Dr. Zullo, attendees brainstormed options to update protocol for the baseball team for when a student athlete might be struggling or in need of additional support.

This training marks the first step of a mental health initiative at Swarthmore College to support students across the campus with potential thoughts of su***de as well as promoting healthy communication around mental health. Stay tuned to hear more about how this program will grow during the upcoming academic year!

Dr. Matt Wintersteen was honored to give the keynote address at the Drs. Theresa and Charles Yeo Writing Prize Reception and Reading last night. This year’s theme was Discovering Joy. His keynote offered a compelling juxtaposition between this year’s writing theme and the work of the David Farber ASPIRE Center.

“Joy lives with misery. Joy lives with sadness. Joy lives with pain. Joy lives with sorrow. The question is whether or not you have the vision and courage to see it through the darkness.”

Dr. Lucas Zullo was recently invited to present at Jefferson’s Emergency Medicine Grand Rounds where he taught about evidence-based approaches to su***de prevention in the Emergency Department setting. Attendees included Emergency Medicine faculty and a range of medical trainees working in the Emergency Department. Discussions with attendees highlighted the intersection of substance use and mental health, and the importance of leading with empathy when supporting patients and their loved ones.
These conversations are essential to shaping a more understanding, responsive, and human-centered approach to care. 💙

April is Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month. There are varied and diverse experiences across the autism spectrum. Nearly 80% of autistic children have at least one co-occurring mental health condition—such as depression, anxiety, or ADHD—and nearly half have two or more. Research also shows that 87.8% of autistic individuals report lifetime suicidal thoughts, 56.3% report non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), and nearly one-third (31.0%) report a su***de attempt, underscoring the critical need for accessible, responsive mental health support.
This month, we recognize the validity of these experiences and the importance of equitable access to supports and services. Together, we can create a society where autistic individuals are supported, understood, and affirmed.
