This has been weighing heavy on my mind.
There’s a trend going around showing deep tissue massage that looks *extremely* painful ..I even saw some with the client being held down, others are screaming😮 … and I want to clear something up :
Deep tissue should **NOT** feel like torture.
Yes, it can be intense at times—but there’s a big difference between *therapeutic intensity* and *pain that makes your body tense, brace, or hold your breath.*
When massage is too painful, your body shifts into the **sympathetic nervous system**—your “fight or flight” mode.
Instead of relaxing, your muscles guard and tighten to protect you. This can actually create more tension, increase heart rate, and even store trauma in the body… the exact opposite of what we’re trying to achieve.
Real, effective deep tissue work:
✨ Works *with* your nervous system—not against it
✨ Allows the body to soften and release naturally
✨ Feels like a “good hurt,” not overwhelming pain
✨ Keeps you breathing and relaxed, not bracing
Your body heals best when it feels **safe and calm**, not attacked.
If you’ve ever thought “no pain, no gain” was the goal in massage—it’s time to rethink that. Healing doesn’t have to hurt to be effective. 💛
At TherapyWorks, we focus on results *and* nervous system regulation and safety—because lasting relief comes from both.
If it's ever "painful" to you- let your therapist know and we will adjust to your nervous system.
Wishing you the best health,
