Herbs have been part of oral care for a long time, long before the toothpaste aisle had seventy options and half of them promised a “minty arctic blast.”
These herbs have traditionally been used in mouth rinses, tooth powders, pastes, and simple herbal care routines to help freshen breath, support the gums, and keep the mouth feeling clean.
🌿 Clove
Clove is one of the best-known herbs for oral care. It contains eugenol, the compound that gives clove its strong aroma and its long history of use for temporary tooth and gum discomfort.
🌿 Neem
Neem has been used in traditional oral care for tooth powders, rinses, and herbal pastes. It is often valued for supporting gum health and helping reduce plaque buildup.
🌿 Sage
Sage has a long history as a mouth rinse herb. It is often used to freshen breath and support irritated gums, especially in simple herbal rinses.
🌿 Peppermint
Peppermint brings that clean, cooling feeling people naturally associate with fresh breath. Its menthol-rich leaves are commonly used in oral care blends to leave the mouth feeling refreshed.
🌿 Thyme
Thyme contains thymol, a strong aromatic compound used in some oral care products. Traditionally, thyme has been used in mouth care for its cleansing qualities and sharp, herbal freshness.
🌿 Licorice Root
Licorice root has been included in some herbal mouth care blends to support a balanced oral environment. It has a naturally sweet flavor, which also makes it easier to work into tooth powders or rinses.
Simple, old-school, and still useful. Sometimes the good stuff was already sitting in the herb cabinet.
