This year's International Day of the Midwife theme is "Midwives: Critical in Every Crisis." This theme is poignant in the context of Black midwifery because Black midwives have long stood at the gates of their communities through deeply critical crises, whether manmade or natural — navigating social and political impacts while standing at the threshold of life and birth.

We advocate for access to midwives in every community and for recognizing the critical role a midwife plays in a healthy health system, not only for improving maternal health outcomes and eliminating disparities, but also because midwives are care experts with a host of services, tools, and skill sets at their disposal for providing care and education across the life spectrum and in a variety of circumstances and settings.

We uphold a vision for a health system that empowers, enables, and allows midwives to show up in their fullest capacity.

Mi nombre es Mónica Huertas y soy madre de cuatro hijos, y soy bilingüe - inglés y español Doula de nacimiento y lactancia. Tengo una licenciatura en Trabajo Social de Rhode Island College y tengo experiencia trabajando con adolescentes embarazadas y padres que han sufrido traumas por abuso sexual. Tengo experiencia en el uso de la defensa y la educación para capacitar a las madres no documentadas para que tomen decisiones informadas sobre sus planes de embarazo y parto. Mi objetivo es hacer que todos los padres, incluidas las madres jóvenes indocumentadas, sesientan escuchadas, apoyadas, capacitadas y sin miedo. ¿Cuáles son los beneficios de tener una doula?

Numerosos estudios han documentado los beneficios de tener una doula presente durante el parto. Una reciente Cochrane Review, Apoyo continuo para las mujeres durante el parto , mostró un muy alto número de resultados positivos de nacimiento cuando una doula estaba presente. Con el apoyo de una doula, las mujeres eran menos propensos a tener medicamentos administrado para aliviar el dolor y menos probabilidades de tener un parto por cesárea. Las mujeres también reportaron teniendo una experiencia de dar a luz más positiva

My name is Monica Huertas and I am a mother of four children, and I am a bilingual - English and spanish - Birth and Breastfeeding Doula. I have a Bachelor's degree in Social Work From Rhode Island College and am expierenced working with Pregnant and Parenting teens who have suffered sexual abuse trauma. I have experience using advocacy and education to empower undocmented moms to make informed decisions about their pregnancy and birthing plans. My goal is to make every parent- including young, undocumented moms- feel heard, supported, empowered and unafraid.I draw my knowledge in brith-work from being trained by DONA,(Doulas of North America) and the amazing moms who I have worked with and also my Carribean- Afro- Indigenous roots, and my environmental activist roots.
