Last Friday, we hosted our Community-Centered Care Summit, bringing together health care providers, community leaders, and local organizations to collaborate on improving health outcomes and expanding access to care across our community.

The event concluded with the Advancing Excellence in Equitable Care Awards, recognizing individuals and teams for outstanding contributions to health equity.

Congratulations to this year’s recipients:
• Advancing Excellence in Equitable Care Leader Award: Dr. Mary Beth Sutter, FAAFP, Care New England Medical Group, for her innovative programs supporting mothers and families and strengthening outcomes in underserved communities.
• Advancing Excellence in Equitable Care Team Award: The Providence Center’s Assertive Community Treatment, Registration, Quality Improvement, and Outpatient Programs teams, whose data-driven work helped nearly eliminate a gap in primary care access for Black male clients.

We also celebrated Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island, which received Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island’s inaugural People4Equity Designation in recognition of its work to reduce disparities in maternal health.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in advancing more equitable care for our community

During a recent interview with WPRI 12 Health, Dr. Melissa Murphy, executive chief of surgery at Care New England, spoke about a concerning trend: colorectal cancer is increasingly being diagnosed in younger adults.

She also shared the importance of not ignoring symptoms and reminded viewers that regular screenings should begin at age 45 for average-risk adults.

Watch the full interview to learn more about the warning signs and why early screening matters:

According to the American Cancer Society, 20% of all new colon cancer cases happen in people under the age of 55. That’s compared to about 10% back in the 1990s.

Colorectal cancer is being diagnosed in younger adults, and screening now begins at age 45 — not 50.

Dr. Nnenna Okpara and Dr. Mariam Fayek of Women & Infants Hospital share why earlier screening matters. Colonoscopies can detect and remove polyps before they become cancerous.

If you’re 45+, it’s time to schedule your screening.
