As kids are on their way back to school - here are some tips to start the year strong:

1. Prioritize healthy routines: sleep, exercise & nutritious meals.
Begin with the basics. Make sure your child eats healthy, well-rounded meals, and gets plenty of physical activity and sleep.

2. Stay up-to-date on checkups & immunizations
If your child has not had a well-child checkup in the last year, schedule a back-to-school physical. At the checkup, your pediatrician can go over treatment plans for your child during the school year, fill prescriptions and complete school forms.

During the checkup, ask your pediatrician if your child is caught up on their vaccines. It is an important step to help keep everyone healthy in school. When more school kids have immunity, it’s harder for diseases to spread.

3. Mental health matters. Many children and teens struggle with mental health – it’s important to monitor them for signs like keeping up in school, sleep problems or physical symptoms. Getting support early can make all the difference.

The rapid obsession with protein is resonating with teens. But how much protein do they really need?

A simple calculation:
Recommended protein intake is about 0.85 grams per kilogram of body weight, a number that increases to about 1.0 to 1.5 g per kilogram of body weight for teen athletes. As a reference, a 3.5-ounce serving of chicken breast has about 32 grams of protein.
