Here is a demonstration of the Cox Technic of spinal manipulation applied to the lumbar spine.

The Cox Technic has been shown to:
- Increase the intervertebral disc height
- Decrease the intradiscal pressure
- Increase the foraminal area (where your nerves exit the spine)
- Adjust the facet joints and restore range of motion

How do we treat cervical disc bulges?

Family and Sports Chiropractic of New Roads offers a gentle and evidence-based approach to the treatment of your cervical disc bulge.

We practice by using the Cox technic (table shown below) of spinal manipulation which has been shown through research to:

- Increase the intervertebral disc height
- Decrease the intradiscal pressure
- Increase the foraminal area (where your nerves exit the spine)
- Adjust the facet joints and restore range of motion

This is a very gentle technic and doesn’t require any “cracking” or “popping”

We also utilize soft tissue techniques like manual therapy, instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization, and dry needling to address the muscles and surrounding soft tissues.

Our office also has a cervical traction machine (shown below) and other modalities like E-stim (TENS) which can help speed up your recovery.

If you have been struggling with neck pain, we would love to help. Give us a call at (225) 635-4172.

Let us show you how we are a different evidence-based approach to chiropractic care!

The winning topic for this week is Cervical Disc Bulge.

What is a cervical disc bulge?

There are different types of pathologies that can occur to the discs in our spine. One type of pathology is called a disc bulge. This is characterized by more than one quarter (25%) of the circumference of the disc being displaced or bulged. Bulges are almost always gradual and broad and often involve the whole disc (called a circumferential bulge).
*Examples of different disc pathologies seen below

What causes a cervical disc bulge?

A bulging disc can be caused by trauma, but more often this type of disc change is seen with aging. The bulging of the disc along with bowing of the vertebral endplates is what is partly responsible for disc height loss.

What are some symptoms of a cervical disc bulge?

Here are some of the common symptoms associated with a cervical disc bulge:
- Posterior or posterior lateral neck pain
- May or may not have persistent radicular symptoms (pain, numbness/tingling, &/or weakness) into the arm.
- Neck pain can be persistent even at rest.
- Possible redness and swelling
- Cervical muscle spasms
- Cervical range of motion is also decreased and usually provokes pain

Stay tuned tomorrow as we go over how the Cox technic is a gentle and effective treatment for pain and dysfunction associated with a cervical disc bulge.

This week we are covering Bertolotti's Syndrome.
Sooo.........

What is Bertolotti's Syndrome?

Bertolotti’s Syndrome is a congenital disorder that causes back pain due to a lumbosacral transitional vertebra.

What causes Bertolotti’s Syndrome?

Bertolotti’s Syndrome is a congenital disorder meaning something you are born with. There have also been a few studies where multiple family members all suffer from a lumbosacral transitional vertebra which suggests that it can have a genetic component as well. A lumbosacral transitional vertebra means that there is aberrant articulation between the lowest lumbar vertebra (L5) and the sacrum. This can mean there is enlargement of one or both transverse processes with possible fusion of one or both transverse processes to the sacrum (shown below).

What are some symptoms of Bertolotti’s Syndrome?

The symptoms of Bertolotti’s Syndrome are usually lower back pain that can be referred into the legs.

There may also be some limited range of motion in your lower back.

You may also notice discomfort near your Sacroiliac (SI) joints.

It is also possible to develop sciatica type symptoms (radiating pain down the leg).

Stay tuned as we cover how we treat Bertolotti's Syndrome at Family and Sports Chiropractic of New Roads.
