Please join us in congratulating our 2026 Dr. Helm Scholarship winners!
Emma LaCour – Senior at False River Academy
Bailey Achee – Senior at Catholic of Pointe Coupee
Krystal Sanchez – Senior at STEM Magnet Academy of Pointe Coupee

Each of these outstanding students has demonstrated a genuine passion for pursuing a career in the medical field. We are honored to support them with this $250 scholarship as they take the next step and head off to college. We can’t wait to see the impact they will make in the future of healthcare!

This scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Helm’s lifelong dedication to medicine and his deep compassion for the Pointe Coupee community. A beloved family practice physician in New Roads, Dr. Helm devoted decades to caring for others. He delivered approximately 2,500 babies, served as Parish Coroner, Chief of Staff at Pointe Coupee General Hospital, and spent 25 years as Medical Director of Pointe Coupee Homebound Health and Hospice.

Even after retiring from private practice, Dr. Helm continued serving as Medical Director until his passing on May 20, 2016. Among his many honors, he was especially proud to be named Rural Physician of the Year.

This scholarship is a small but meaningful way to carry on Dr. Helm’s legacy of compassion, service, and commitment to others. Congratulations to all three of our winners!

All proceeds benefit the Janell LaCombe Cancer Fund, which helps Pointe Coupee Parish residents battling cancer. In 2025, more than $106,000 was distributed directly to local cancer patients. Last year’s luncheon raised nearly $20,000 in just four hours, a powerful reflection of our community’s generosity.
