Alternative Text, or "Alt Text", is a quick and easy way to make your posts more accessible to those with certain cognitive and sensory disabilities.

Alt text is a written description of an image or graphic that provides helpful context for those unable to see the image itself, such as those with impaired vision. Though typically hidden, alt text is read aloud with the use of screen readers (and will appear if the image fails to load on a website!).

This guide shows just a few examples of how to add alt text to your own social media posts on Facebook, Instagram and X/Twitter. We think accessibility for everyone with disabilities is crucial, and adding alt text is a simple way to achieve that! 💙

Though the first Disability Pride Month was celebrated in July 1990, the Disability Pride Flag wasn't created until much later, gaining notoriety and traction in 2019 and going through several iterations.

The flag itself was created by artist and writer Ann Magill, who has cerebral palsy herself. Its first iteration--a bolder-colored flag with more of a zig-zag design--was praised by the community, but found to cause a strobe-like effect on computer and phone screens, which was off-putting and potentially triggering for certain disabilities. After feedback and collaboration from the larger disability community, the current flag--more muted in its colors and easier on the eyes--is truly an effort from the greater disability community.

These graphics break down the colors in the flag and what each one represents.

Today, July 1, marks the beginning of Disability Pride Month, an annual recognition and celebration of people with disabilities. Observed in July, Disability Pride Month commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was first signed into law on July 26, 1990.

Disability Pride Month recognizes not just the importance of the ADA but also highlights the richness of disability culture, history, and community. It also seeks to challenge the belief that disabled folks need to conform to "normal" society in order to live meaningful lives.

The first Disability Pride Day took place in Boston in 1990 and the first Disability Pride Parade took place in Chicago in 2004. Since then, celebrations have spread all over the country, with celebrations happening in cities across the nation. Throughout the month of July, we'll be posting content related to Disability Pride Month on our Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn pages as part of our celebration. 💙

Today is Juneteenth, a holiday recognizing the day when enslaved African Americans were freed two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
We at Penn Residential would like to honor Juneteenth with a reminder that anyone can be impacted by a disability--whether intellectual, developmental, or physical. The following article, published by the Autistic Women & Nonbinary Network, touches on how disabled Black slaves were impacted by--and often left out of--the Emancipation process.

As the day continues, we encourage everyone to educate themselves on the history of Juneteenth; to honor our Black colleagues, neighbors, and peers; and to recognize the intersectionality between the IDD community and other communities we may all be a part of. 💙

Juneteenth recognizes the day when enslaved African-American people in Texas were freed two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Yet history has largely forgotten how many enslaved disabled people also were not liberated by the Emancipation Proclamation. Blog post by Tony Alexander, Policy Man...
