We’ve mentioned the feeding hierarchy (smell, touch, kiss, lick, bite, chew, swallow) on this page many times… but what are some practical ways you ca engage with food to target that hierarchy at home? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Try DESCRIBING your food! 🍓🍌🥑🥦You can talk about the colors, shapes, smells, etc. to decrease anxiety around new foods! By adding labels and descriptors, we can make new foods feel more familiar and less intimidating!

For older kiddos… try finding similarities between preferred foods and non-preferred foods by comparing these attributes! 🍴

Oral motor skills are responsible for the appropriate functioning and use of the facial muscles (think lips, jaw, tongue, cheeks, and palate) for both speaking and eating!

We want to share with you some fun oral motor exercises you can incorporate into your child’s play a few times a day! If your child is unable to do a particular oral-motor exercise listed, it may indicate weakness in that specific muscle group that would benefit from more focused work. Our team of Speech-Language Pathologists is equipped to evaluate and treat oral motor weaknesses!
