The Heart of New Ulm Project The Heart of New Ulm is a collaborative partnership working to support a culture of wellness in New Ulm; www.heartofnewulm.com

Mission: The Heart of New Ulm (HONU) aims to improve the health, well-being and quality of life of all New Ulm-area residents through education, available resources, initiatives and partnerships that empower people of all ages to take responsibility for their own health in a supportive environment. About Us
Since 2009, the Heart of New Ulm (HONU) has been helping people in New Ulm, Minn., improve

their health. The project began as a 10-year population health research project that was a collaborative partnership of the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF), Allina Health and the New Ulm community designed to help residents reduce their risk for heart disease. It offered a unique environment for studying how various interventions, systems and environmental improvements, along with policy changes, can impact the health of an entire community. Today, the Heart of New Ulm continues as a community-owned health initiative being sustained through community partnership and funding. It is focused on three significant, complex and interrelated health issues, where progress in one area can support improvements in the rest:
• Healthy lifestyles across the lifespan: Our goal is to support educational programs, activities and policies that help individuals increase access to physical activity and healthful foods, as well as support eating well and active living.

• Mental health: Our goal is to reduce the burden of mental health by reducing stigma, improving early identification, and offering resiliency programming focused on mental health conditions.

• Addiction and risky use of substances: Our goal is to support educational programs, activities and policies that increase awareness of addiction and misuse of legal substances, and also address the use of illegal substances. Health Equity Goal: Our goal is to increase awareness of health equity in New Ulm and work to impact the decision making process within government and organizations to decrease the impact of the inequities that occur in New Ulm. Our page features supports, resources, tips, community events, and news on heart health. According to the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota (BikeMN), research shows that up to 60 percent of deaths from bicycle crashes are the result of head trauma. The good news is that wearing a helmet makes a real difference! Helmets reduce the risk of head injury by 48 percent, traumatic brain injury by 53 percent, facial injury by 23 percent, and fatal injury by 34 percent. Protect YOUR melon!!

The Heart of New Ulm Project’s Safe Routes to School Action Team is pleased to promote May’s SEE.SAFE.SMART. campaign message, which is “Drive 3 feet away — keep us safe.” Read more in our column in the Journal at https://www.nujournal.com/opinion/columns/2025/05/29/drive-3-feet-away-keep-us-safe/

Things you should know: 1) Minnesota state law requires a driver to have at least 3 feet distance to pass a bicyclist on the road for safety. While 3 feet is the minimum passing distance a motor vehicle must provide, more space is better and needed for safety at higher speeds. 2) On many narrow Minnesota roads, passing isn't always possible without changing lanes. That’s why since 2017, it’s been legal in Minnesota for a driver to pass a bicycle even in a “no passing” zone (double yellow line) if it’s safe to do so. This makes passing more convenient for drivers, but also safer for bicyclists.

Thanks to everyone in New Ulm for making a commitment to SEE people biking and walking, act SAFE, and be SMART.

In addition to the Free Summer Meals for Kids program taking place this June and July, families may also be eligible for extra grocery support this summer. ☀️

Through the SUN Bucks program (formerly called Summer EBT or S-EBT), eligible families with children attending New Ulm Public Schools may receive $120 per child to help cover the cost of groceries.

If a New Ulm Public Schools student has been deemed eligible for free or reduced-price meals—either through a submitted application or as a participant in SNAP or MFIP as certified by MDE—they will automatically be enrolled in the SUN Bucks program.

Applications from other families are welcome and encouraged, and approval is based on eligibility. Families are encouraged to reach out if they are unsure about their status or if they need assistance completing an application.

Great news! In an effort to discourage underage possession and consumption of alcohol, ma*****na and other controlled substances, the Brown County Commissioners unanimously approved a countywide social host ordinance (SHO) at their May 6, 2025, meeting. Studies indicate that social host ordinances are among the most effective and recommended ways to reduce underage drinking. Thanks to the Brown County Chemical Health Action Team for all their work helping bring attention to the need for this ordinance.
