Northwoods Velvaere Studio

Northwoods Velvaere Studio This is a calm, nature-rooted space that honors your pace and supports meaningful change. Hello!

Northwoods Velvaere Studio offers private-pay somatic therapy and gentle yoga for women seeking a holistic, body-centered approach to mental health and well-being. I’m Bobbi Jo, a somatic/mental health therapist, yoga teacher, and holistic practitioner. I began my clinical journey in my late thirties, first working with children and later expanding my focus to support women in reconnecting with themselves and rebuilding confidence from within. My own experiences led me to this work, and I’m passionate about supporting neurodivergent individuals and those healing from trauma. I believe growth happens through compassion, patience, and acceptance, not pressure or perfection. In my practice, I focus on ADHD, anxiety, depression, grief, inner child healing, shadow work, and somatic therapy. My approach blends Somatic, CBT, mindfulness, inner child work, and body-centered trauma healing to help each person move toward self-love, self-trust, and a more peaceful, aligned life. I provide outpatient mental health therapy primarily for women, as well as adolescents ages 13–18, creating a safe and empowering space where healing can unfold naturally. 🌿

🌿 Monthly Friday Gentle Chair-Supported Movement 🌿

I wanted to share a quick update with you all.

The April and May sessions of Gentle Chair-Supported Movement will be canceled due to low participation and some upcoming remodeling that will limit space at the Cultural Center.

I am grateful for the opportunity to offer this space and hold this vision for accessible, gentle movement in our community. It meant a great deal to show up for it, even in its early stages.

Sometimes things pause, shift, or change form, and that is simply part of the natural rhythm of life.

I will keep you updated when this offering returns.

Thank you for being part of this in whatever way you were. 💚

Nature’s Cycles and Why Humans Need Cycles Too

Nature moves through cycles.

Day and night.
The phases of the moon.
The changing seasons.

Growth, rest, renewal, and release all have their place in the natural world.

Human bodies also move through cycles, but modern life often asks us to move at the same pace every day of the year. The expectation to stay constantly productive can create tension when our bodies are asking for something different.

Research in chronobiology shows that human physiology follows natural rhythms influenced by light, seasonal patterns, and internal biological clocks. These rhythms affect sleep, mood, energy levels, and stress responses.
Source: National Institute of General Medical Sciences. Circadian Rhythms Fact Sheet. 2023.
https://www.nigms.nih.gov/education/fact-sheets/Pages/circadian-rhythms.aspx

Honoring cycles might look like:

• resting when your body is tired
• noticing times of energy and creativity
• allowing periods of reflection or quiet

Nature does not rush its cycles.

Sometimes healing means allowing our own rhythms to unfold in the same way.

Understanding the Nervous System and Stress Responses

The nervous system plays a central role in how the body responds to stress.

When the brain perceives danger or pressure, the body activates the sympathetic nervous system. This system prepares the body for action, increasing heart rate, breathing, and alertness.

When the body feels safe, the parasympathetic nervous system helps the body rest, digest, and recover.

These systems are designed to work together to help us adapt to our environment.

However, long periods of stress can make it harder for the body to return to a relaxed state.

Research shows that chronic stress can affect multiple systems in the body, including sleep, mood regulation, and immune functioning.
Source: McEwen BS. “Protective and Damaging Effects of Stress Mediators.” New England Journal of Medicine. 1998.

Practices that support nervous system regulation can include:

• slow breathing
• gentle movement
• time in nature
• mindfulness practices
• supportive social connection

Learning how the nervous system works can help people better understand their responses and support their well-being.

Spring does not arrive all at once… and neither do we.

There can be a quiet shift this time of year.
More light. A little more energy. Emotions that feel like they come out of nowhere.

Your body is adjusting too.

You do not have to rush into doing more.
You do not have to be constantly working on your healing.
You are allowed to rest, to feel, and to simply be in your life.

In this month’s blog, I share:
• how seasonal changes impact the nervous system
• a gentle somatic practice you can try
• why emotions are meant to move through, not be fixed
• ways to reconnect with your body this spring

Along with updates on:
🌿 Seasonal nature-based therapy beginning mid-April
🌿 Yoga at the Cultural Center
🌿 Private-pay somatic therapy options

If you have been feeling the shift lately, this is for you.

With care,
Bobbi Jo Hamilton, MSW, LICSW, RYT ✨

The Nervous System and Seasonal Change Seasonal transitions impact the nervous system more than we often realize. As daylight increases and temperatures shift, the body begins to adjust its internal rhythms. Research shows that light exposure plays a role in regulating circadian rhythms and mood,

Life Transitions: When Life Feels Like It Is Shifting Under Your Feet

Life transitions can feel both exciting and unsettling at the same time.

Sometimes they are expected.
Sometimes they arrive without warning.

Changes in relationships, work, family roles, health, or identity can create a sense that the ground beneath us is shifting.

Transitions often require us to adapt emotionally, mentally, and physically.

Research on life transitions shows that periods of change can activate stress responses as the brain works to process uncertainty and adjust to new circumstances.
Source: Schlossberg NK. Counseling Adults in Transition. Springer Publishing, 2011.

During times of transition, it can be helpful to slow down and focus on small supports.

Things like:

• maintaining simple routines
• spending time outdoors
• connecting with supportive people
• taking moments to breathe and check in with your body

Transitions are not just logistical changes.

They are also nervous system experiences.

Giving yourself time to adjust can make the process gentler.

A Simple 2-Minute Grounding Practice

Grounding practices help bring attention back to the present moment and can support nervous system regulation.

One simple way to do this is through orienting.

You can try this practice almost anywhere.

Take a slow breath.

Then gently look around the space you are in.

Notice five things you can see.

It might be light through a window, a plant, the color of a wall, or the shape of something nearby.

Allow your eyes to move slowly.

There is no rush.

Orienting to your environment helps the brain recognize that you are safe in the present moment. This can support regulation of the nervous system.
Source: Levine PA. Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma. North Atlantic Books, 1997.

Even one or two minutes of orienting can help bring the body out of autopilot and back into awareness.
