Ditmas Children's Nursing & Rehab

Ditmas Children's Nursing & Rehab Medical and social care to children with complex medical conditions and/or ventilator dependency.

Brooklyn’s highest staff:patient ratio, on-site K-12 education, PT, OT, ST and socialization programs. This unique care facility wasn’t based on the traditional post-acute care business model. Instead, it was conceived around the needs of children, specifically what they need in order to grow and flourish and develop and be happy. Because at Ditmas Children’s, we’re helping to raise a group of chi

ldren, and that came first. Only then did we Then we deal with what additions would be needed if all of those children were dealing with very complex medical and pulmonary conditions. So, we aren’t simply a children’s nursing facility, or a certified ventilator unit with some special features added, or a cerebral care unit. We’re a home, with some very special adaptations for our very special family. Ditmas Children’s provides complete medical and social care, unique to each child. A toddler has very different needs from a pre-teen, so “standard procedure” here means every child is treated as the
unique individual that they are. Many of our residents have multiple medical issues requiring the care of pediatric specialists in pulmonology, internal medicine, behavioral medicine, orthopedics and oher disciplines. Our children all receive the same hospital-level care that they would receive from a major medical center, right in the comfort and safety of their own rooms. Ditmas Children’s has only 20 beds, enabling us to deliver a more home-like experience. We have warm, comfortable bedrooms with room for toys, hobbies and sleepovers, backyard play space, and even our own dedicated classrooms providing K-12 instruction. And care here is provided by a team that was from hospitals and specialty care units all across the city, with the goal of building the finest team you’ll find anywhere. Our doctors, nurses and other care specialists are chosen for their expertise of course, but it’s their compassion and commitment to child care that makes each of them stand out. It’s that team that continually sets the bar for excellence in caring for chronically ill children.

Tzivy, Wide-eyed wonder.
Four months ago, Tzivy joined our growing family and every day she grows more responsive and more
engaged. Her sensory therapy includes fiber optic light which is one of the most advanced forms of therapy available. As well as massage therapy, aroma therapy and audio stimulation.
Babies like Tzivy are discovering their world in new and exciting ways.  Most important, the love and care provided by our team and the careful application of
some of the medical industry’s most advanced technology means that babies like Tzivy can grow and develop in the best possible way.
Tzivy is engaging more and more with her surroundings and her progress is inspirational.

Karen Chung is the Assistant Director of Nursing at Ditmas Children’s and she’s in the Spotlight this month. Karen epitomizes our goal to always be setting the bar for health care, and she’s always trying to top it. Already holding a Masters of Science in Nursing, Karen is currently working toward her Doctorate in Philosophy. “My passion has always been neo-natal care and to me, there’s no question in my mind that children’s post-hospital care is best at Ditmas Children’s. The care, the ratio of nurses to patients, the total interdisciplinary involvement of staff, and the love for these children by everyone on our team is so in evidence here. Each of these children are “our” children and we all just love what we do here.”

Karen is a native of Jamaica in the West Indies, where she was introduced to child care by her grandmother, a mid-wife and pediatric care provider in a multi-cultural society. She firmly believes that her own childhood experience drove her to what she does now. “Now I have the opportunity to give back, and to give back with something that I love – taking care of kids, and there’s always a place for kids in my heart.”

Not content to “just” be an outstanding nurse, Karen is a mom, a traveler, and an avid indoor gardener. It’s hard to believe, but she also manages to prepare the next generation of care-givers, as a member of the adjunct faculty at Adelphi University as well as an Associate Professor at the State University of New York at Farmingdale.

“Working at Ditmas Children’s has made realize how critically important the right post-hospital care is, and I’m so happy to be a part of that, to help these children complete their journey home. It’s a love of mine to care for these children and to use my experience and training to help them realize their potential”.

For her compassion, her dedication, her loyalty and her love, and for so many other reasons, Karen Chung is our first selection to be in the Spotlight.

International Women’s Day is a great idea, and Ditmas Children’s has the women to prove it!
We always brag about our staff, because they deserve it. Some of the best medical professionals in the city have chosen Ditmas Children’s as the place where they can make the biggest difference, and we’re glad they did.
Every week we ask them to do what some believe is impossible, but nothing is impossible for this group. They even found the time to express themselves in art, which can be found throughout the building. Great women, great care givers, and pretty darn good artists, too!

This is Chaim, one of our littlest patients. He spent the first seven months of his young life in a hospital, tethered to a respirator that did his breathing for him. He was so weak he wasn’t even able to receive the ritual bris that all Jewish boys receive shortly after birth. At seven months, Chaim wasn’t able to breath on his own or even hold his head up, and then his parent’s found Ditmas Children’s. Since arriving here, Chaim has received extensive respiratory therapy, physical therapy and even lighting massages, aromatherapy and audio therapy, all of which have combined to make Chaim one of our newest success stories. He’s received his bris, and while not yet fully weaned off the respirator he does spend time every day breathing on his own, he’s holding his head up and responding happily to his care-givers. Very soon Chaim will celebrate his first birthday with family and friends at Ditmas Children’s, but he’s giving us the greatest gift of all – he’s responding to our care and therapy and planning to leave the respirator behind and spend his next birthday at home, where a child belongs.

A Child in the arms of a nurse!

Jade, only four months old, spent her life in a hospital until her mother discovered Ditmas Children’s where Jade found the care and love she needed to survive outside of a hospital. It’s just a little more than a week since Jade joined our family and already she is the darling of our nursing staff.
Jade has a long way to go, and we’re asking as many people as possible to let her and her parents know that you’re pulling for her success. Please like this post, share it, comment on it, but let’s find a way to show our support for Jade. We’ll let you know how she’s doing.
