When I say that I am currently reading Middlemarch, people are invariably asking “Did you get to Rome yet?” Well, I am in Rome now and, do I understand the question. Not only can everybody probably relate to this extreme internal loneliness but nobody ever expressed it like Eliot. I can read this page over and over again.
